Barb: I noticed you posted some Meehan information on the Brooklyn listserv that you had transcribed. Do you have any Meehan connections yourself? My great-grandmother was Ellen Meehan (born about 1848 in Ireland, daughter of John Meehan and Catherine/Ellen Griffin). Ellen came to the US maybe around 1870 (nothing definite) and married Peter Brennan in 1876. Ellen and Peter had 4 children who survived to adulthood. They lived primarily in the Irishtown section of Brooklyn -- Gold Street near St. Anne's RC Church, then later North Oxford Street, on the other side of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Ellen died in 1919 from complications from the Spanish flu epidemic. Just thought I'd check to see you had an interest in the Meehans at all or know of anyone out there who does. Thanks for all you do for the Brooklyn list. Lauren ______________________________________ Lauren MacKenzie Petit from my padded cell @ Bellevue ... Hello to all: The c. 1919 Will of Andrew Watson bequeathed two (2) Highland Boulevard, Brooklyn, properties to his heirs. Below are the addresses, along with the Block and Lot numbers found listed on the NYC assessors' website: 303 Highland Boulevard Block 3891 Lot 500 and 331 Highland Boulevard Block 3891 Lot 451 NYC Archives - tax photo collection - advised that neither of these addresses could be located. Naturally, if they can't locate the addresses, they cannot provide photos for me. I'm hoping the following information will allow a list member identify these properties so I may obtain photos. According to my cousin, both 303 and 331 Highland Boulevard, Brooklyn, were (around 1915-19120) located in the 75th Police Precinct of Miller Avenue and Liberty Avenue. Also, 303 Highland Boulevard cornered on Barberry Court and behind it ran a private road. That private road was in Queens County and was the outlying border of Wilson Avenue police precinct. (I'm assuming the Wilson Avenue precinct is in Queen's County.) I am totally unfamiliar with Brooklyn's layout and am hoping my cousin's description will mean something to someone. Thanks everyone, Cissi Searching: WATSON, GALLETLY, MOIR and HUGHES.
Hi everyone - does anyone have access to this book? NYC Methodist Marriages 1785-1893 by Wm Scott Fischer ? I was wondering if someone could do a lookup if they had the book. Thanks in advance. Hello List, I read Nancy's email and thought I'd add my story.? When my grandfather died there was a document in his strong box which notified his father (my great-grandfather) of the death of my second great uncle (my grandfather's great uncle - I'll call him Charles from now on).? I know this sounds complicated but the document was a notice that Charles'?wife was contesting his will.? Because of that, and because Charles had died without having any children, every known living relative of his had to be notified.? The document contained 33 names.? I knew of about 5 of them at the time.? After years of searching, I now know who every single one of those people were.? Several years later a very kind soul?went over the probate proceedings for me and she discovered that Charles' wife was not happy that he had left half of his estate to the church.? She ended up getting less than she would have if she'd left it alone!? Serves her right - she was his second wife and they had only been married for a couple years.? I think we call that a "gold digger" these days! So, I always suggest that researchers check probate records.? Even if a person dies without a will, if they had any kind of estate at all, there will be probate proceedings.? My husbands third great grandfather died in Philadelphia in 1859 while owning several properties.? His probate proceedings lasted over 15 years and contain all kinds of wonderful information.? SUPER COOL!!! ____________________________________ Here SHE is, the USS New York, made from the World Trade Center ! USS New York It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center .. It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions th at include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft. Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite , LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept 9, 2003, 'those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence,' recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. 'It was a spiritual moment for everybody there.' Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the 'hair on my neck stood up.' 'It had a big meaning to it for all of us,' he said. 'They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back.' The ship's motto? 'Never Forget' Please keep this going so everyone can see what we are made of in this country! **************Psssst...Have you heard the news? Oh! Me too...I hope you'll let us know what he has to say. I felt a little stupid yesterday when I was leaving for work (late) and lamented to my daughter that I wasn't going to have time to run out back and lower the flag to half staff and she told me (here's what made me feel good)..."Mom, the President determines and declares when flags fly at half staff and I haven't heard him make that declaration this time". I'd forgotten that (I'm getting old and forgetting and re-remembering lots of things) but was glad and proud my daughter knows it. Then, of course, saw last night that lots of you were aware and I hadn't misdirected anyone by saying I'd be flying my flag at half staff. john dvorak wrote: >If anybody HASN't heard yet, the USS NEW YORK is our newest ship made partly from the wreckage of the World Trade Center, and one of my nephews has been stationed on board her in this first tour of the ship! I live in Tallahassee , FL and I'm trying to access Brooklyn City Directories for the years 1898 through 1910 in order to locate some of my relatives. I would be very grateful if someone would be willing to help me by photocopying pages of these Directories that contain individuals with my surname and emailing or snail-mailing me the pages found. I will reimburse the person for photocopying and mailing expenses. I assume that the Brooklyn Public Library has these publications in their collection. Since I’m a “beggar”, I’m obviously not on a schedule. I just need someone to show me some “genealogical kindness”. If you are willing to help, please reply and we can discuss the details Thanks, Jim Spargo IV Tallahasse, FL Let me remember how it used to be and bring one morn back again. David Copperfield

As was any of the wars our ancestors, fathers, brothers uncles, cousins, etc, have fought and died for, the only difference is WE have experienced this horrific history through our own eyes, ears and most importantly, our hearts first hands. As we pay tribute on Veterans Day, Memorial Day, VD Day, we pay tribute now to the events of September 11. You must remember, this is a tragedy that is being focused on in schools, across our town halls and parks across not only our great nation BUT the world nations themselves. We live history on these lists, we search our past, combing through time for events of the past, so we may connect to our lives, our children's future. The past doesn't need to be a hundred years old. Yesterday was the past, last night was the past, the moment this letter is sent it is in the past..It is history, it is a memory in the winds of time. This is not political, this is REMEMBERANCE. There are families grieving this morning who lost family members and friends..I for one am one of them..and I'll be damned if I let anyone take away the tribute to these innocent men, women and children whose lives were sacrificed in the name of a religious faction. As I asked you to fly a flag on July 4th, or visit a veteran's grave, I will ask you today to take those moments of silence , no matter where you are, and remember those whose lives were lost. As with WW2, we must never forget. We need to learn from these tragedies, we need to stand as a whole, not only as a nation, but as a people, as part of the human race. We can only make change, when we remember the pain of the past. Nancy **************Psssst...Have you heard the news? On this list, they are. For example, Nancy Lutz, our List Administrator, sends us greetings on holidays, and we subscribers often post our memories of how we celebrated them in Brooklyn. Nancy is a kind and generous person who has made the Brooklyn List a family. Please join us in this FLY THE FLAG campaign and forward this to your address book friends, asking them to pass it on. THE PROGRAM: On Thursday, September 11th, 2008, display an American flag outside every home, apartment, office, and store in the United States . Every individual can make it their duty to display an American flag on this seventh anniversary of our country's worst travesty. This is a gesture of unity to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends, and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who are fighting to preserve our cherished freedoms. In the days, weeks and months following 9/11, our country was bathed in American flags as citizens mourned the incredible losses and stood shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism. Sadly, those flags have all but disappeared. Our patriotism pulled us through some tough times and it shouldn't take another attack to galvanize us in solidarity. Our American flag represents our country. Together we can prevail over terrorism of all kinds Take a moment to think back to how you felt on 9/11 and let those sentiments guide you. Some folks are choosing to drive with their car lights on. Others will wear red, white, and blue as statements of unity. God Bless You and God Bless America ! ************** Psssst...Have you heard the news? There's a new fashion blog, plus the latest fall trends and hair styles at StyleList.com. I have read with great interest the debate of Ancestry.com's ability, or inability, depending on your personal experience, to keep private records just that, private. I just happened to be in contact with Ancestry's help desk because none of my pictures were available unless I personally invited a guest to view my tree and I wanted to know why. After providing an answer, (which seemed acceptable to me, i.e., it takes them time to index all the pic's) I posed the question about privacy. I am pasting below the response that I received. I am not taking a stand for or against Ancestry.com - simply passing along their explanation for those interested!
