    1. [BKLYN] NY Census 1900 John A Halton
    2. Huntingdons
    3. Hi Thank-you to all those who replied, especially those who also checked the 1910 Census as well. It would appear Elizabeth OCONNELL is not the Elizabeth he married as she is listed as aged 27 in 1900 but his wife is listed as aged 54 in 1910. However the 1910 reveals Marian Kennedy is with them in 1900 and 1910 (the name varied in every census, but was Marian on her birth record in Ireland) and is Elizabeth's sister. It also tells me Elizabeth and John A HALTON married in 1904 - although we still do not know where. Thank-you for all your help. Bernard.

    2. Hi... Does anyone know if there are published records for Schermerhorn Church? I believe that this church was a German Evangelical Church. I attempted once to find records but didn't get very far. I am looking for a baptism from the late 1860s or early 1870s. 1. Re: [BKLYN] Out of the norm results
    2. Karen is right about not overlooking Probate records. We started our research with City Directories. We really only knew our great grandparents names (and had to ask a funeral director for their given names, at that !!) Being Irish, it seemed as though everyone shared the same common names, which served to complicate things. A person named Simon, with the same surname as our family, shared an address with our family members at several points, and was listed in the town for a longer time period than our known ancestors were. My sister said to, "Let him go. He's not ours.") I refused, saying I'd let him go when it was proved he wasn't "ours". We finally found death dates for several family members and I contacted the cemetery. A couple of phone calls later we had the burial information and Simon turned out to have been the purchaser of the burial plots !!! Jackpot !! Another day we were at a research facility and I just happened to take down a big book to look at while waiting for my sister to finish with the film she was viewing. It turned out to be a Lis Pendens volume. There was Simon's name recorded !! He had owned property. And there were dates. (Duh!!) Our thoughts went wild with trying to figure out where we could get more information. At that point, finding new information just couldn't happen fast enough to satisfy us, but we weren't very well versed on just what was available or where to find it. So, back to Probate records, sort of. We somehow found out that we should go to the Surrogate Court and see what was there. Wow ! Simon had died intestate, and remember, he owned property. I reeled when reading the list of next of kin and couldn't believe my eyes. That led to finding court notes and newspaper articles. They were all suing each other. It was great !!! I'm not quite sure what that says about these ancestors, but I am grateful for all of it, and am very fond of them all. It kind of helped put some flesh on their bones, as it were. Gotta love those feisty Irish. **************Looking for simple solutions to your real-life financial challenges? Check out WalletPop for the latest news and information, tips and calculators. 1. [BKLYN] NY Census 1900 John A HALTON
    2. Huntingdons
    3. Hi, Some years ago, when I had access to the above census, I obtained a third hand image of my 2xgreat uncle John A HALTON, (Reporter & Editor) at that time my interest was in tracing him and his brother Dr Frederick J HALTON who was staying with him, both having been born in Mullingar, Westmeath, Ireland and moved to New York in Jun 1866. The image had the following details:- STATE: New York; Kings County; City of Brooklyn, New York. Supervisor Dist: 2; Enumerator Dist: 115; Ward: 9; Sheet 5. The actual address is blurred but appears to be 60 Stirling Place. I since learnt he 'married' between 1900 and 1909 a lady known as Elizabeth, although the marriage record has never been found and they went to live at 103 St John's Place, Brooklyn until his death in 1929 (from his obituary in the NY Times and Standard Union) and Elizabeth's will. Now a note in one of Frederick's letters home suggests Elizabeth may have been boarding with them both in the 1900 census, but on my copy her surname cannot be deciphered, (line 84) as is the name above hers (line 83) also a boarder and possibly her cousin. Does anyone on the list have access to a better image or transcript and can provide the details? Does anyone have any further information? Thank-you for your help, Bernard.

    2. Hi Cissi, Bear in mind that the borders of the New York City Borough of Brooklyn (coterminous with the New York County of Kings) and the U.S.P.S. "Brooklyn, NY" postal zone are NOT THE SAME: a place can have a "Brooklyn, NY" mailing address and be in the New York City Borough of Queens (coterminous with the New York County of Queens). I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. The common greeting during Rosh ha Shannah and the Days of Awe. This is a shortening of "L'Shannah tovah tikatev v'taihatem" (or, to women, "L'Shannah tovah tikatevi v'taihatemi"), which means, "May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year." This year, the two-day Jewish Biblical Festival of Rosh ha Shannah (Lev. 23:23-25) will begin at sunset on Monday, September 29 on the civil calendar.

Hi Everyone - The link above is from <http://www.live.local.com/> www.live.local.com and shows 331 Highland Boulevard, Brooklyn. 331 Highland was/is definitely in Brooklyn, located at the corner of Barberry Court and Highland Boulevard. This address appears to be the house with the red roof immediately behind the arrow marker. If you look closely, there is a street running along the left side of the red-roofed house. This is Barberry Court. The map's highlighting for Barberry Court is wrong. It's off center and runs through a house located two houses left of the red roofed house. Left of Barberry Court is Heath Place. Both of these short streets run from Highland Boulevard back to another - unlabeled - street. That unlabeled street used to be the private road running behind 331 Highland. It was in Queens County and was the outlying border of Wilson Avenue police precinct. I'm wondering if the NYC Municipal Archives cannot locate older photos of 303 and 331 Highland Boulevard, Brooklyn, as they may now be considered part of Queens. Are any of you familiar with the area of 303 and 331 Highland Avenue area? Is it possible someone could send me some photos of the area? With your help, I'm hoping to identify these two family homes. Thanks for your replies. Cissi
