Danny Cassidy October 15, 2008 -- The author and scholar, Daniel Cassidy has died in San Francisco. The Irish Echo's "Slanguage" columnist was 65. By Irish Echo Staff -- issue of October 22-28, 2008 Daniel Cassidy, who wrote the Irish Echo's "Slanguage" column, has died. The 65-year-old scholar and filmmaker had been battling pancreatic cancer over the past several months. Cassidy, who lived in San Francisco, won the 2007 American Book award for nonfiction for his pioneering "How the Irish Invented Slang: The Secret Language of the Crossroads." His thesis was that much of American slang -- words, for instance, such as jazz, scam, poker, fluke and knack -- was derived from the Irish language. "It was a privilege to know him; a great grace to have had his friendship," said author Peter Quinn. "His legacy to the Irish-American community is inestimable. We are so much poorer for his passing." The Brooklyn-born son of a navy chief petty officer, Cassidy attended the New York Military Academy and after that studied English literature at Cornell University. He worked for many years as a musician. In 1995, he founded and co-directed the Irish Studies program at New College of California, and directed the school's Media and Film Studies program. His own documentary about Northern Ireland, "Civil Rights and Civil Wrongs" was nominated for an Emmy in 1996. Cassidy was a community leader, union and anti-war activist. He was a co-founder of San Francisco's annual Crossroads Irish-American Festival. In the last year of his life, Cassidy was working on a research project about the relationship between Irish immigrants and African Americans in 19th century Manhattan. He is survived by Clare McIntyre, his wife of 25 years. **************One site has it all. Your email accounts, your social networks, and the things you love. Tuesday, November 25, is the 225th Anniversary of Evacuation Day. Now almost forgotten, Evacuation Day, especially in the NYC area, was celebrated as a holiday long before the Fourth of July: On November 25, 1783, the British Army boarded their naval vessels and evacuated New York City (then only coterminous with New York County), their wartime headquarters and their last military position* in the United States during the Revolutionary War. As the British sailed away south in retreat through the Narrows separating Staten Island on the west and Long Island on the east, the last thing they saw, as their ships sunk below the horizon, was the Flag of the United States of America flying atop the Liberty Pole (an extended flag pole) in the frontyard of the Dutch Reformed Church in the Hamlet of New Utrecht, Town of New Utrecht, in the south-central part of Kings County. Today this location is at Christopher Columbus Boulevard (18th Avenue) and Liberty Pole Boulevard (84th Street) in the Bensonhurst neighborhood in the south-central part of the New York City Borough of Brooklyn. (The NYC Borough of Brooklyn is coterminous with the NYS Kings County). Replaced six times over the years, the 106' Liberty Pole is the last remaining Liberty Pole in the original thirteen United States. On top of the Pole is the original eagle and weathervane. The eagle is made of wood and has a 5' wingspan. After two hundred and twenty-five years, the weather has weakened it considerably and it has been reinforced with iron bands. The eagle has looked over the bay and seen many sailing vessels, steamships and war ships. It has been said that the eyes of this golden eagle has looked upon more change in the world's history than occurred from the days of Nebuchadnezzar to the day when the eagle was raised. Here's the URL for the New Utrecht Liberty Pole Association: http://www.historicnewutrecht.org/LPA.html Here's the URL for the Dutch Reformed Church (celebrated its 330th anniversary on Saturday, October 27, 2007): http://www.newutrechtchurch.org/ New Yorkers celebrated November 25 as Evacuation Day for well over a century. But, with the warming of relations with England immediately preceding World War I and R. H. Macy's publicity campaigns for a parade celebrating another late November festival, Evacuation Day celebrations faded away. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan Great Falls, MT & Jericho, NY * Although the Treaty of Paris of 1783 said that Britain would evacuate all posts within the new United States, they did not. Scattered posts from present-day Vermont to present-day Michigan remained in British hands until Jay's Treaty of 1795. Niagara was one of these British held forts on U. S. soil. </HTML>
Has anyone gotten more recent death certificates from this office? Was it difficult? I'm a little confused by their options. They basically list two cases on their order form: "I. Generally, relatives of the deceased are entitled to receive certified copies of the death record. II. Those Not Related to the Deceased: Only non-relatives who are able to establish a right to the certificate by providing documentation, are entitled to receive a certified copy. " Is that it? Do they issue non-certified copies? I don't want a certified copy, but they don't say anything at all about that as an option. I'm not a direct descendant; I'm trying to get the death certificate of my grandfather's cousin, who died in 2004. I don't know why they couldn't be a little clearer... T.

At one time, there were two sites that automatically popped up on Ancestry, especially if you entered an Irish name. They aren't popping up now, and I can't remember exactly what their titles were. If I knew, I could access them through the alphabetical list of databases. Perhaps someone has some idea? It would be greatly appreciated. One was something like Irish Friends and Family, that showed postings to a newspaper [in Boston] made by Irish abroad, who were searching for relatives who arrived here. The other was not specifically Irish, but I found several of my Irish on the database. Its title was something like Letters of Administration in the NY County Court, during a specific time frame...circa 1865-1880. Thanks for any reminders, or URLS to these sites. I'm not sure about the second site you're seeking but here is the link to the first: http://infowanted.bc.edu/ From October 1831 through October 1921, the Boston Pilot newspaper printed a “Missing Friends” column with advertisements from people looking for “lost” friends and relatives who had emigrated from Ireland to the United States. This collection of more than 31,438 records is available as a searchable online database, which contains a text record for each ad that appeared in the Pilot. Hi there sweetie, Not much happening here yet.? I hope its the same for you!! Love you
It may be that this death was never reported to the Social Security Administration and therefore the information will not show up in the SSDI. You can still request a copy of the SS-5 but will need to show reasonable need for said document probably. Although I was able to get a copy of my grandfathers SS5 by sending a copy of the death certificate and stating that he was my grandfather on my Dad's side. He also got added to the SSDI after that. "I also found the 'Alease Powell' addition on the SSDI, but the city, and more importantly, the social security number, is not correct from the information that Barb is looking for and that is why I did not send that information to her. With a little more research, I found that the first three numbers of the SS card of 'Altevia Douglas' is from New York." -- John Quigley, Webmaster Kinney County Texas <http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Etxkinney> My Blog <http://brojohn.blogspot.com/> Fax#1-501-642-3251 Watkins <http://www.watkinsonline.com/jquigley>Independent Associate 101 Ways to <http://www.mypowermall.com/media/3908/6> Support our Troops
Tom and Barb, I also found the 'Alease Powell' addition on the SSDI, but the city, and more importantly, the social security number, is not correct from the information that Barb is looking for and that is why I did not send that information to her.
