    1. [BKLYN] Green-Wood Cemetery & CW veterans
    2. FYI If you have an American Civil War ancestor interred at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NYC, you may want to email them informing them of it. Homepage: http://www.green-wood.com/ A few weeks ago I noted that the site for Green-Wood Cemetery stated they are honoring US Civil War veterans, and in an onlist post I asked what they are doing. I also shared that my g-g grandfather was a CW veteran, and that his name and those of his two single, adult sons can be searched on Green-Wood's site, but that his wife was omitted. I knew that the wife was interred there because in the 1980s, the cemetery sent me copies of each one's interment index card. A couple of years ago I emailed Green-Wood and asked them to update their site to include my g-g grandmother. They told me it was not possible. This week I received a lovely email from Green-Wood sharing that they added my g-g grandmother name, which is misspelled, to their burial search engine. They added that an historian would be contacting me. Today the historian wrote me, asking for biographical information about my g-g grandfather. They are planning a special Memorial Day event in 2011. Please take a few minutes to go to the homepage of Green-Wood, to check that your ancestor is correctly listed, by clicking on Burial Inquiry at the bottom of the page in small font. Then, email your veteran's name and plot location number. If we don't honor our own, no one else will. 1. Re: [BKLYN] death records for nassau county in 1906
    2. Rich - Hempstead is on LI. Queens County did cover this area, but that was before her death. That part was broken off from Queens when the Western part of Queens joined the City. I don't know who you would go to for this, but I am pretty certain it would not be Queens. 2. FYI l) If your ancestor drove a truck for Railway Express, eventually these employees were assigned Social Security numbers that identified them with the Railroad Board. Although this seems logical, it was not always the case, and the may have received a second/corrected SS number. 2) A newer Social Security number decoding list is at: http://www.usatrace.com/ssnchart.html ======================== nuttyj_2006@yahoo.com writes: > 700 - 728 - Railroad Board > 729 - 733 - Enumeration at Entry > > (Note: 700 - 728 Issuance of these nubmers to railroad employees was > discontinued July 1, 1963.) > ************** Make your life easier with all your friends, email, and favorite sites in one place. 1. [BKLYN] Cert-BINGO!
    2. Dear Friends, This is meant to encourage you to never give up! My g-grandmother, Mary O'CONNELL's Baptismal certificate was found at St. Mary's of the Assumption Church in Staten Island! They just phoned me. Woo-woo! A little backgound. Long ago, I saw her POB listed on the 1900 census as "S.I." but I assumed it meant "L.I." and ignored it, as Directories showed her father working in Manhattan. Years later, the family's Emigrant Savings Bank record showed a change of address to Staten Island. When this detail appeared twice, I thought it was time to follow through on it. I researched ferry maps and the years that early Catholic Churches began on Staten Island, and determined that St. Mary's was the closest to " Van Pelt Ave, N Shor SI," the address from the Emigrant Bank account. Since I did not hear from the church, yesterday I rough drafted a search request to another parish on Staten Island. Now that's unnecssary. Of course the additional bonus is that the names of Godparents will lead me to other finds, I'm sure of it. So, folks...keep on keeping on!
