    1. [BKLYN] On this day in 1918 ... Brooklyn subway crash crash killed 97 persons
    2. A Tunnel of Horrors as subway crash crash killed 97 persons, mostly women, on their way home from work. A five-car Brooklyn Rapid Transit Brighton Beach line train, just entering the Malbone Street Tunnel (because of this accident, Malbone Street later renamed Empire Boulevard) on the evening of Nov. 1, 1918, derailed, obviously out of control, and the resulting crash killed 97 persons, mostly women, on their way home from work, and injured many more. 3. WOW!!!! If indeed all power was out how did you get all these 'facts"?. Have you an "eye in the sky"?????...We're sure if you were out & about to eyeball all this in your area so was everyone else. Seems to us this rant should have been on your "Blog" and not an "off topic" on this list, but I forgot you have it like that. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, November 01, 2011 12:23 PM To: [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: Re: [BKLYN] Bklyn list OFF TOPIC FYI NYS was declared a State of Emergency by Governor CUOMO in the early afternoon Saturday. 3. Thank you to Barb and Kathleen for all your help I did see the first indication of the business was in the 1892 Brooklyn directory. Then Kathleen from the ListServ found that Henry R Ruescher died in 1900 (just after the Census was taken) and is buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn. The funny thing is that he is buried just a few graves away from the family I am trying to connect the photo to. I don't see an indication of the business after 1900, so it may have closed with his death. But I think it is fair to say, at a minimum. that the H.C. Ruescher Photography Studio operated between 1892 and 1900. That helps a lot! Phil On Oct 28, 2011, at 5:58 AM, [email protected] wrote: > H.C. 3. Oops, sorry, I see that I just posted an answer to a question that had already been answered! (I have been away for a couple of weeks & although catching up, am not doing so in the right order.) I also have a question. Very basic and obvious, perhaps, but I can't figure it out & hope someone will help: Is there an "easy" way to reply/post to this list? When I hit "reply" it brings up the address of the last person who posted -- therefore, whatever I write will presumably go to that person's email only, not to the list at large. So I type in the address ( [email protected]) -- but then that doesn't include the original post that I am replying to...unless I copy and paste it into the text of my own (which for some reason I am not very good at doing). Thanks for your help! Lisa (Researching the lives of her Irish-Brooklyn ancestors remotely from Scotland)

    2. Thank you, Walter. You always provide the most interesting and esoteric information. As a supplement to your post, here is the famous sonnet by NYC born Emma LAZARUS, written in 1883 to honor the Lady of the Harbor.: "The New Colossus" Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame, "Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" 1. [BKLYN] Brooklyn Newspapers
    2. Hi... I would like to know if the Brooklyn Standard Union has been added to any of the online Newspaper Collections? I have found two articles regarding my ancestor Samuel Rawlins (Rawlings) in online records of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and in Fulton Postcards. The first incident was in 1877 and the second in March of 1882. Each rendering of the incidents provides a bit more information. I had wondered what other newspapers would be worth checking. By 1882, my family was living in Williamsburg. Thanks, Bev W
