    1. [BKLYN] serious question
    2. Suppose you became genie friends with an older, perhaps even sickly person online, and heard from that person regularly. Then suddenly, no responses to your emails. What would you think, or do? Does anyone have suggestions to prevent this from happening? Barb

    3. One of the problems is that too many of us, don't have firewalls, you need to have a good firewall, good antivirus and good anti spam programs that run all the time. Also, when you send email to friends and family use bcc, it hides their emails and they will not be hacked. If you don't have a firewall, get one, there are a number of good ones, and surprise but the new windows firewall is quite good. Check out Download.com from Cnet you will see a number of free programs. The same thing with antivirus, personally I love AVG, they have a free version and it works fine. Please understand that you have to protect yourself and your computer all the time. BTW there are a number of really excellent programs that will protect your passwords, from RoboForm which is somewhat expensive but worth the money. There are also some really excellent free programs, again check Download.com, they review the programs for you so you will know what you are getting. 2. That's not the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth! The best protection is watching what you open! The next is having a weird password that even your best friend couldn't guess. 2. Thank you for the advice, Joyce at [email protected] May I add that when schools & colleges are on vacation, you may notice more of these spam notices. Also, I recommend not letting your computer to sit idly "ON," especially overnight. Be diligent and turn it off or run virus scan when you run errands. Best to All, Barb

    3. I've had this happen recently - no response in spite of numerous emails.  I should have written or saved info from her emails regarding her daughters (names, email addys) but I didn't.  I've since explained this situation to those on my contact list and now ask for other contact info and save it under their names as alternate info = just in case.    I miss my friend and hope that she is okay.   Cathy Champion in Fenton, MO (St. Louis) This message represents the official view of the little voices in my head.     --- On Fri, 11/11/11, [email protected] <[email protected]> wrote: Suppose you became genie friends with an older, perhaps even sickly person online, and heard from that person regularly.  Then suddenly, no responses

    1. Re: [BKLYN] recently hacked e-mails
    2. There are even more reasons to take this hacking stuff seriously...these "bugs" which get installed on your computer can also record passwords as you type them, thus giving them access to any financial accounts you access on line... Many times, these are not just pranks...someone is after your info in order to compromise your security. Also NEVER open emails from banks etc...even if you have an account there...go to the banking site and check your messages through that avenue...If you DO open something you think is from your bank, never click on links or give private info...your bank HAS that info, and if they don't they would never ask for it via email anyway...when in doubt call your bank or forward the email to the SPAM email set up by your bank (they all have email addresses to send questionable emails--although not always easy to find the address, sometimes easier to just call and ask them). It takes a lot to be safe on the internet these days...viruses can be planted on even the most harmless looking sites, sites that you would think safe such as Yahoo Finance. In the last few years, on the yahoo financial board for Washington Mutual, hundreds of people have gotten viruses that were planted for nefarious purposes (and probably planted by hedge funds) ...so even the safest appearing sites can be harmful... Keep a GOOD virus scan program running in the background on your computer 24/7...and also set up your scan program to delete ad tracking programs...many sites you go to these days try to install tracking programs on your computer so they can see where you go, what you do...most times the purpose for this is just to see your shopping habits etc for marketing purposes, but not always...so keep ALL eyes away from your computer by good protection running 24/7 on your system...you'll save yourself a LOT of headaches :-) Joyce In a message dated 11/11/2011 12:06:43 P.M. 1. [BKLYN] [NY-IRISH] Irish resource
    2. Hi Folks, There's another rather unique resource for those with ancestors of County Monaghan, yet useful to all searching 19th century Ireland. Title: Melancholy Madness: A Coroner's Casebook by Michelle McGoff-McCANN, 2003 paperback ISBN:1 85635 424 5; Mercier Press. It can be purchased online from Ireland. William Charles WADDELL, Esq. began in 1846, and covered northern Monagahn. Since these were famine days, they appointed Hugh SWANZY, Esq. as coroner to work out of Castleblayney in southern Monaghan. WADDELL, from a wealthy Presbyterian family, kept a journal of cases during his career, 1846-1878, in three volumes. The first and third volumes are missing. A descendant named Jimmy WELLS, saved the 2nd volume covering 861 inquests and inquiries from Jan. 1856 - March 1876. There is a searchable name index in the back of the book. This is the sort of book that anyone of Irish extraction can learn something about the era, culture, inheritance, poorhouses, workhouses, courts, and the preciousness of land ownership and tenancy. 1. [BKLYN] BKLYN] Newtown Creek
    2. Thanks for the informational links, Chris. FYI to all, before cars and bridges, Newtown Creek was especially significant to Catholic residents of Manhattan Island. After the Rural Cemetery Act passed, further interments in Manhattan proper were disallowed. The Trustees of Old St. Patrick's Cathedral on Mott Street purchased land along Newtown Creek to begin Calvary Roman Catholic Cemetery, right along its banks. The first burial at Calvary took place on 31 July 1848. Deceased and mourners were transported to Calvary Cemetery, for funerals, by ferry boats located at a depot at 23rd Street and the East River. These ferries traveled across the East River, to the east side inlet of Newton Creek. Historical obituaries often told mourners to meet at this ferry depot. Calvary Cemetery, although located in Queens, NYC is not part of the Diocese of Brooklyn, but is overseen by the Archdiocese of New York. I'm sure some of you wondered, as I did, how the funeral processions actually arrived at Calvary Cemetery.
