Friday, November 25, is the 228th Anniversary of Evacuation Day. Now almost forgotten, Evacuation Day, especially in the NYC area, was celebrated as a holiday long before the Fourth of July: On November 25, 1783, the British Army boarded their naval vessels and evacuated New York City (then only coterminous with New York County), their wartime headquarters and their last military position* in the United States during the Revolutionary War. As the British sailed away south in retreat through the Narrows separating Staten Island on the west and Long Island on the east, the last thing they saw, as their ships sunk below the horizon, was the Flag of the United States of America flying atop the Liberty Pole (an extended flag pole) in the frontyard of the Dutch Reformed Church in the Hamlet of New Utrecht, Town of New Utrecht, in the south-central part of Kings County. Today this location is at Christopher Columbus Boulevard (18th Avenue) and Liberty Pole Boulevard (84th Street) in the Bensonhurst neighborhood in the south-central part of the New York City Borough of Brooklyn. (The NYC Borough of Brooklyn is coterminous with the NYS Kings County). Replaced six times over the years, the 106' Liberty Pole is the last remaining Liberty Pole in the original thirteen United States. On top of the Pole is the original eagle and weathervane. The eagle is made of wood and has a 5' wingspan. After two hundred and twenty-eight years, the weather has weakened it considerably and it has been reinforced with iron bands. The eagle has looked over the bay and seen many sailing vessels, steamships and war ships. It has been said that the eyes of this golden eagle has looked upon more change in the world's history than occurred from the days of Nebuchadnezzar to the day when the eagle was raised. Here's the URL for the New Utrecht Liberty Pole Association: http://www.historicnewutrecht.org/LPA.html Here's the URL for the Dutch Reformed Church (celebrated its 334th anniversary on Thursday, October 27, 2011): http://www.newutrechtchurch.org/ New Yorkers celebrated November 25 as Evacuation Day for well over a century. But, with the warming of relations with England immediately preceding World War I and R. H. Macy's publicity campaigns for a parade celebrating another late November festival, Evacuation Day celebrations faded away. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan Great Falls, MT & Jericho, NY * Although the Treaty of Paris of 1783 said that Britain would evacuate all posts within the new United States, they did not. Scattered posts from present-day Vermont to present-day Michigan remained in British hands until Jay's Treaty of 1795. Niagara was one of these British held forts on U. S. soil.

Is there anything in the new law relating to really really old adoptions where the adopted person is long deceased and grandchildren would like to access the sealed adoption files? My grandfather was born in 1889 and had no birth certificate, and altho I've since managed to find out quite a lot about his father, I was not allowed to see the file relating to his adoption by his stepfather circa 1900, in Chicago, at which time his biological father was still living. Maybe I will try again to request those documents. I know this is not about Brooklyn, but THANK YOU BARB for posting it! Perhaps some readers would like to find out why Illinois decided to change their laws, and how it came about, and report back to our lists. For those of us whose Irish arrived early, this article is heartbreaking. For those whose Irish arrived later, they must have had strong genes to survive the Irish Holocaust, and birth children who survived to come to NY! Daily Missouri Republican, published in: St. Louis, Mo Date: April 13 1851 "Emigration of Paupers" During the last three or four weeks, several hundred paupers have been landed at New York in a starving and diseased condition. The majority of these, it appears, are taken from the poor houses, in the south of Ireland, by the landowners, on whose property they have been living, and who, for their support, are forced to pay poor rates, which are levied on the land at so much per acre. It may be seen from this, how desirous these land proprietors are to get rid of such burdens. Accordingly, they take them from the poor houses, or off the land, and contract with the Captains of English vessels to ship them to some American port at a reduced rate per head, in consideration of the number. The food they receive during passage, is of the very worst description, and this, combined with the sickness consequent on a long sea voyage, renders them fit subjects for the hospital, on their arrival. Some are so exhausted with disease and hunger, they they often do not survive the voyage, while others die a few days after landing. On Sunday last, about one hundred of these miserable creatures might be seen, in an almost naked and famishing state, on Broadway, begging the charity of the passers. Many of these were formerly honest, independent farmers, in their own country, before the famine, and bad legislation, together, reduced them to poverty and starvation. There are also, we understand, a large number lying in the last stages of disease in some of the most loathsome cellars at the end of Washington and Greenwich streets, where they are unable to obtain that medical attention which their condition requires. Among those who are engaged in sending these unfortunate being to this country, the Marquis of Lansdowne, and the Knight of Kerry, have rendered themselves conspicuous. These are at present engaged, as we learn from some of their former tenants, in making arrangements for the wholesale deportation of the paupers on their estates, numbering altogether two or three thousand persons. http://www.jewishfederations.org/page.aspx?id=9 This will take you to "Jewish funeral customs: saying goodbye to a loved one". It is filled with a wonderful description of the practices and mentions the tear of cloth. Judie Cook
Barbara, The torn black ribbon that the immediate family wears during the 7-day Shiva period is a non-orthodox substitute for the rendering of one's clothes (mourners wear the clothes that they tore at the time of learning of the death or at the funeral). For more info, please see: http://www.jewfaq.org/death.htm#Mourning I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan Great Falls, MT & Jericho, NY
Would someone in the know please tell us the name of the torn black ribbon that Jewish mourners wear and what the symbol signifies. I'm also curious about cultural mourning practices. Thank you, Barb
Some wee bits of genealogy information that impact most lists, and not just NY. Please feel free to pass them on. l) Today is the last FREE day to access Ancestry's newMilitary Records. There's a great improvement in number of WW II holdings; three men I entered before appear now under the same spellings I entered previously. Although my dad was US Army, they have additional information on him on a Navy ship to the Pacific. Navy records are more extensive, too. Forewarning: Some of the name transcriptions are almost funny; perhaps rushing volunteers entered information to meet this weekend's deadline. 2) The genealogical community mourns the passing of Bridgett SCHNEIDER, co-founder of Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness (RAOGK), begin in 1999. It seems to me that if you TRULY became good friends with someone on line, you would have exchanged at least phone numbers... I was part of an eBay chat room some years ago, and many folks became friends with one person or another, so that someone always had a way to contact one of us should we "disappear" without warning...we also had our spouses post for us should something happen and we wound up in the hospital etc... This list is not as much of a tight knit group as that group was, and just by it's nature the same is not possible...but if you become close to someone, you should ask to exchange phone numbers...for those "what if" situations. I have noticed people on this list keep things very close to the chest, as opposed to other types of "chat" atmospheres. If you make friends with someone and exchange emails off list of a personal nature, then you should consider exchanging contact info...I know in the group I was in on eBay many folks were "elderly" and we lost folks quite often to cancer, heart attacks etc...but due to the network we set up, we always knew what was going on with who should they become ill or something. It sounds like a few of you have lost track of someone (speaking of which I have not seen Kathy around in quite a long while) and if you have not exchanged phone numbers or snail mail addresses, there is not much you can do at this point. If you know their last name, try pipl.com to try to search for them. Amazing the amount of info on that website. I was amazed how much info I found on myself there when I looked...even though all my phone numbers are unlisted, there they were for all the world to see. I hope that person turns up alive and well, and just had/has something going on that prevented them from posting. Perhaps an illness or death in the family has kept them away, or maybe even something as simple as tight finances preventing them from having computer access... A lot of folks are having to cut back on things these days--between rising prices and dwindling incomes a lot of folks in the country are having difficulty right now. So--If you have a special buddy you want to stay in touch with, by all means, exchange phone numbers off list... Joyce In a message dated 11/12/2011 11:34:26 A.M. One of the problems is that too many of us, don't have firewalls, you need to have a good firewall, good antivirus and good anti spam programs that run all the time. Also, when you send email to friends and family use bcc, it hides their emails and they will not be hacked. If you don't have a firewall, get one, there are a number of good ones, and surprise but the new windows firewall is quite good. Check out Download.com from Cnet you will see a number of free programs. The same thing with antivirus, personally I love AVG, they have a free version and it works fine. Please understand that you have to protect yourself and your computer all the time. BTW there are a number of really excellent programs that will protect your passwords, from RoboForm which is somewhat expensive but worth the money. There are also some really excellent free programs, again check Download.com, they review the programs for you so you will know what you are getting.
