    1. [BKLYN] 1919--Volstead Act, NY brewers, 9 raids
    2. The Huntsville Daily Times, published in Huntsville, AL October 30 1919 Page/Column: Page 1, Column 4 REVENUE MEN MAKE 9 RAIDS AND 20 ARRESTS --------------------------- By the Associated Press New York, N. Y., Oct. 30 – Constitutionality of the Volstead prohibition enforcement act as it applies to war-time prohibition is attached in a suit which counsel for New York brewers and restaurant men were preparing today for filing in the federal court. The petition will ask that the agents of the government be restrained from enforcing the act. Similar suits, it was stated, will be brought in various other states. The decision to attack the constitutionality of the measure was reached at a conference of brewing and restaurant interests last night, which convened at about the same hour that the effectiveness of the Volstead law begin to be felt in a series of spectacular raids by internal revenue agents in the course of which two men were shot. There were nine raids during the evening and twenty arrests. Revenue agents visited the scores of the other saloons, but found no evidence that they were not complying with the law. The shooting occurred in connection with a raid on a café in West Forty-Second Street near Eighth Avenue, and known in the old days of the tenderloin as “the red mill.” The revenue agents declined to discuss the shooting which the spectators said was done by one or more of the agents. Colonel Daniel PORTER, supervising internal revenue agent for the New York district, who has charge of the liquor enforcement campaign here, declared that his six hundred men would wage a steady drive until the sale of anything stronger than “half of one per cent” has been stopped. http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/link.php?action=detail&id=91489

    2. The Huntsville Daily Times, published in: Huntsville, AL Date: November 2 1919 Page/Column: Section 2, Page 7, Column 5 BUTCHERS ARE ON STRIKE IN NEW YORK STATE ---------------------------- By the Associated Press New York, N. Y., Nov. 1 – Demands that provision wagon drivers should receive from $102 to $245 a week (correct), were among those made y five hundred inside butchers in what was denounced by Adolph GOBEL as the first step in a “Bolshevist” movement to take over his plant in Brooklyn. Mr. GOBEL, who announced last night that he had closed his doors temporarily after the butchers had gone on a strike, said that he was “informed by an insider” that the unionists planned, after accomplishing their purpose by a series of strikes, to allow him six per cent on his investment and to divide all the profits over that amount among themselves. This strike was said by Mr. GOBEL to be primarily an effort to force the drivers and the outside salesmen to join the union. The drivers, according to Mr. GOBEL, recognized the demands made for them as excessive, and refused to join the strikers. They now receive $49 to $80 a week. http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/link.php?action=detail&id=91655

    1. [BKLYN] Holy Cross Cemetery
    2. Hello, I have gone to Holy Cross many times over the years, to my own family's graves and to photograph headstones for others. I always go with another person. The cemetery is huge and you can find yourself in an area where no one would hear you or see you if you required assistance. I would not recommend going there alone; if you must, go to the office and ask if a security guard might keep an eye on you. I also would not be comfortable walking through East Flatbush alone. I hope this is helpful. When I go there with multiple orders, I can mimimize fees for clients. In-person researchers cannot view documents there any more, pre ordering. If anyone seeks birth certificates post 1909 from NYC Dept of Health, please contact me offlist. The same goes for birth certificates at NYC Muni Archives, 1909 and earlier.
