    2. Mary D. Taffet
    3. FYI -- The 1940 census ED for 318 Ditmas Avenue in Brooklyn is 24-2553; but please note that the first page where the number is written is faded a bit and it looks like it says "310" instead of 318. When you get to 320 Ditmas Avenue, you've gone past the bulk of the entries for 318 Ditmas Avenue, though there is at least one supplementary entry for that address on later sheets. 1. [BKLYN] Obtaining NYS Institution Death Certificates
    2. Usually psychiatric facilities filed and hold the death certificates, not the municipalitities. I'm talking back to the early 1900s. These facilities came under the NYS institution umbrella and often individually claim "privacy" to requests for records, and even death certificates. Rockland State Psychiartic in Orangetown, NY held a death certificate hostage from one of my clients, a direct descendant, after multiple requests. The deceased worked for and had an obituary in the New York Times that stated he died at his Bronx, NY home. To circumvent the specific institutions, you an order death certificates for such NYS institutions directly from Albany, if they are more than fifty years old. the waiting list for NYS requests is about six months, unless someone files the application in person for you. Nancy Johnsen CURRAN is an excellent researcher in the Albany area and is acquires institutional death certificates, NYS prison records, and much more. Her homepage is : http://nancycurran.com/#home . Just click on the word "Contact" to email her your request. Barb Metro NYC Researcher =================

    2. Mark Lomax
    3. I managed to get a genealogy copy of the death certificate for my great-aunt, who died at the Newark State School in Wayne County in 1965. She had Down Syndrome, and was an inmate from 1924 until her death. When she was committed, the school was called the Newark State School for Mental Defectives. (They did not mince words then.) With the move toward de-institutionalization, the school was closed in the 1970s. I received the death certificate (before the expiration of the 50-year waiting period) from the Finger Lakes Developmental Disabilities Services office, which holds the vital records for the Newark State School. 1. [BKLYN] BROOKS Family Photographs
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" three old photographs belonging to the BROOKS Family of Massachusetts. Two photographs are of Walter Frederick BROOKS, both taken at the Davis Studio in Worcester, MA. The first appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Walter likely in his 20's. The second is dated 1893 with Walter likely in his 30's at the time. The third photograph is one of Arthur Anderson BROOKS, dated 1888 and taken at the Hardy Studio in Boston, MA. Arthur would appear to be in his 30's or 40's at the time it was taken. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding this BROOKS Family: Arthur Anderson BROOKS (b. 1856) and Walter Frederick BROOKS (b. 1859) were sons of Charles Edwin BROOKS (b. 15 Aug 1824 in Worcester, MA) and Elizabeth Capron FANNING (b. 1823). Census records provide the following information: 1860 census of Worcester, MA: Charles E. BROOKS, age 32, a Grocer, born MA Elisabeth F. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    1. [BKLYN] Still trying to find 1940 ED for 21 Corbin Place in Brooklyn
    2. Mary D. Taffet
    3. Hi all, I've already looked at all 3 EDs that Steve Morse's site identifies for the address 21 Corbin Place with no cross street qualifiers. Only the first of those 3 EDs contains any addresses from Corbin Place at all, and those addresses are all in the 200 block. Right now I'm trying to use nearby addresses (based on Google Maps) to try and get a better idea where to look for 21 Corbin Place. I'm just now starting to view the EDs identified for 34 Cass Place, which looks close by. In the meantime, if anybody either knows where I can find 21 Corbin Place, or runs across it, can you let me know? -- Thanks, Mary

There was evidence that the girl had put a stout fight to prevent the intruders from ramshacking the house. $10,00 [sic] in jewelry was taken Source: http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/link.php?action=detail&id=93591 DC: Dunn, Catharine; 21 y; Dec 21, 1919; 23949; Kings

    1. [BKLYN] 1940 census ED for 522 Ocean Avenue in Brooklyn is 24-2503B
    2. Mary D. Taffet
    3. FYI -- Right now, I'm using the digitized 1940 NYC telephone directories hosted by the NYPL (<http://directme.nypl.org/>) as a clue for addresses where my husband's ancestors and other relatives may have been living during the 1940 census enumeration. I'm also using Ancestry.com's WWII Draft Registration Cards dated 1942. [Unfortunately, I can only identify his two Brooklyn-based grandfathers in the WWII old man's draft cards; one isn't listed in the digitized phone book at all, and the other's name is so common that I don't know which of the 6 listings might be him.] Anyways, I'm then using Steve Morse's unified 1940 census ED finder (<http://www.stevemorse.org/census/unified.html>) to search on the addresses that I find in the directory listings or the draft registration cards. Then I look at the address on Google Maps via Steve's link to that to try and determine how to narrow down the choices when looking for a street that is covered by lots of EDs. One ED I was looking for was for 522 Ocean Avenue in Brooklyn, where I hope to find Theodore/Pat Israel and his wife Anne (Taffet) Israel. Of the 4 ED's that Steve's tool showed me, I found that address in the last one. So I thought I would save anybody else also looking for 522 Ocean Avenue the trouble of searching through all 4 ED's that came up when I selected Church Ave as the cross street -- you'll find 522 Ocean Avenue in ED 24-2503B. I'll share other specific EDs as I identify them. -- Mary
