    3. Have you checked with all of the local cemeteries at which a Catholic might be buried? My family used Holy Cross and I have found them to be very helpful to genealogists. Mornings are busy for them, so call in the afternoon and ask if your John Nolan is buried there. One of my ancestors died on the ferry en route to work at Lakawanna Rail Yard in 1934. Holy Cross was able to tell me he died in NJ, so I knew where to look for his death certificate. When a cemetery does find a burial for you, always be sure to ask who else is interred in the grave. I've obtained some valuable -- and surprising -- information this way! Denise Message: 7 Date: Sun, 22 Apr 2012 16:35:06 -0700 From: <[email protected]> Subject: [BKLYN] Nolan... Try "Bodies in Transit" To: [email protected] Considering that John Nolan may have died outside of NYC you might try the records of "Bodies in Transit," which were licenses to travel with the remains of the deceased thru New York City (Manhattan). So if your ancestor died outside of New York City, and was being buried in the city or just traveling thru, they would have needed this document. These records are great!---they give the name of the deceased, age, place and date of death, place of interment, cause of death, name of doctor, etc, and exist for the years 1859 to 1894.

    3. All,    I often find the fultonhistory site a bit frustrating as well and often will scan the individual pages without having to enter the exact string.pdf into the FH search box.  Here is the link for indexed years of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle on Fulton History: http://fultonhistory.com/my%20photo%20albums/All%20Newspapers/Brooklyn%20NY%20Daily%20Eagle/index.html Select your year, and go from there.  Not all pages are in chronological order, but generally speaking, a great way to look at an entire issue.  Use the UP arrow at the top of the page to return to the entire index of all newspapers indexed on FH.  I have found this to be not only very helpful, but less stressful.   No search box jut each individual page, sheet by sheet. Hope that helps. And, the database at the only Daily Eagle site I've found ends at 1902, NOT after then, as implied in my erroneous original post. Again, I apologize for my crossed wires. When the long long list appeared, I left-clicked my pointer at the top of the list (on open space, not on the first entry), typed control+F (that's the "find" instruction in my system), entered "1923" in the find box, hit "go" or "enter," and it worked.  I hope it works for you. Also, I saw that "Index" was one of the items on the results list.  I went to that item and saw that it had the page numbers for what I think were all "personal notice" sections in that issue, and one of them was "divorce." I didn't find the specific divorce notice I want, so I'll have to resort to searching the 1923 Bklyn Standard Union films I ordered through ILL. Knowing to look for an issue's index as the first step should make finding the divorce-notice section easier for me as I search the films (assuming the Standard Union also published an index for each issue) Pat in Texas ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

I have the 1892 (Feb 16th) NY census where Catherine is listed with all 4 hildren and no husband living in Brooklyn. Catherine died in 1931 and is at Evergreen Cemetery. I have gone to the Municipal Archives and looked up each John Nolan who died etween Jan 1890 and February 1892 who was from age 35-55. John was in his id forties when he died. I have scoured the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. John was a travelling salesman who rove to CT to sell Singer sewing machines. He had a very bad accident nvolving his horse. 3. Sue, I thought I had posted my response to the list, but apparently I didn't. In case it may be helpful to others, I'll repost: If you want to search only the Brooklyn Eagle, choose "Boolean" for search type, and in the search box type "Brooklyn NY Daily Eagle and [search term]" Replace [search term] with the name or surname that you're looking for. You don't need to use quotes. If you want to confine your search to a certain range of years, you can. For example, to search for the last name Mulvany between 1860 and 1870, use "Brooklyn NY Daily Eagle 1860~~1870 and Mulvany" Hope this helps! Nothing in the NY Times either.  Would they have buried him where he died? The CT state indexes start at 1897 for the entire state.  I would have to know a town in order to start searching the time frame we are looking at. Unfortunately, this just may be a dead end.  This is why I thought the church burial records might be helpful.  Any thoughts? 1. [BKLYN] Specifying BROOKLYN DAILY EAGLE ???
    2. Hi Guys: Can anyone post to the list explicit instructions to confine a search specifically to The Brooklyn Daily EAGLE when searching a surname on fultonhistory.com ??? I know there is a way, but for the life of me, I can't figure it out, and with a common surname you have to scroll through hundreds (if not thousands) of 'hits'. Thanking all who respond in advance. M

    1. [BKLYN] how to obtain original deed for Bklyn house
    2. Susan
    3. I found the house my Great-Grandfather owned on 79th St is up for sale and has me wondering if he had it built, or bought it from a previous owner. Back in 1918 it stood on a farm - now it's selling for over a million dollars! I'd appreciate some direction as to how to request a copy of the deed. Thanks in advance, Sue Curley Milone

    3. Kim, It is doubtful that the Church would even have a record of the burial. They rarely keep death records as burial is not a sacrament. If you know the death date you might phone all the RC cemeteries in the area and ask if he's is buried there. In my experience, they usually give that info over the phone. He also may be buried in a National Cemetery such as Cypress Hills. That is, if he was a military veteran. There is a grave locator availble on line for that. It also might be worth looking in the Brooklyn Eagle for a death notice pre 1902, or Fulton Postcards if you think he died in the 20th C. If he died between 1835 and 1876, try the 4 volume set by James Maher of Death and Marriage Notices in the Herald Tribune which is unfortunately not digitized, but is available in many genealogy libraries. I was surprised to find some of my poorest relatives noticed in those volumes. Sheila MacAvoy Block Santa Barbara CA

    3. Kim,    Have you checked for his death certificate on germangenealogy.com yet?  A quick review shows there were at least 7 John Nolan's in Brooklyn.  You may start there and you can order the DC from FHL directly from their site.HTHCatherine --- On Fri, 4/20/12, Kim Formica <[email protected]> wrote: From: Kim Formica <[email protected]> Subject: [BKLYN] Church To: [email protected] Date: Friday, April 20, 2012, 10:32 PM Can anyone offer any incite to which church an Irish Catholic family might have belonged to if they lived on Bergen St in 1885-1890? I am looking for a death record and burial place of John Nolan.  He may have died out of NY.  I have looked through the Municipal Archives without any luck.  My hope is to get help from the Archdiocese with maybe a burial record.  He is not buried with his wife who died 30 years later.  Thanks, Kim Researching NOLAN ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
