    3. You can check with the Diocesan office to see what they have in their records for Catholic Cemeteries. You can also check with the United Methodist Church for their historical records. If Union was a Methodist Cemetery they can probably tell you what happened and which Methodist Church they show as associated with it. Whether or not they will have the actual records in regard to membership is another story, but it will probably give you a good place to start from anyway. If you don't know which Annual Conference that area is under, you can search at gbgm-umc.org for that information. There is a search box which will let you specify that you are looking for the Annual conference for Brooklyn. -- John Quigley "Would it not be better to simplify the system of taxation rather than to sprea d it over such a variety of subjects and pass through so many new hands." --Thomas Jefferson, letter to James Madiso n, 1784

Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: Does anyone know of a list of cemeteries in Brooklyn (perhaps near Greenpoint) in the 1836 - 1851 era. I have an internment list from Calvary that was confusing. The burial date was Dec 23, 1897. I thought it must be a re-internment. When I called Calvary and asked about it I was told there was a note saying the body had come from Union Cemetery with no original date of burial. Looking on line it looks like Union Cemetery became Cedar Grove with the bodies being moved between Dec 1897 and Jan 1898. Union was noted as a Methodist Cemetery. For some reason I thought all my relatives would have been in Calvary, but apparently not. It also appears that they may not have been in Catholic Cemeteries. This family arrived in May of 1836, and settled in Greenpoint. I am looking for 4 burials from arrival in May 1836 to 1851 or so. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks. 3. If you want a section of a map showing the location of a certain address within New York City, you can go to http://gis.nyc.gov/doitt/nycitymap/ All you have to do is type in an address and you will see a small section of the city map with a red box indicating the building you are searching for.  I have found this invaluable in finding my family in the 1940 census, because now I have the cross streets which will enable me to get the correct ED. Hope this is useful to you. Bill Hinkle Port Orange, Florida

    2. I've wanted to learn how to do this, too. At Google maps, I searched for 704 evergreen avenue brooklyn. At the new page, underneath the picture on the left, is a link "Search nearby." I clicked it, entered Roman Catholic Church in the box, clicked search, and got a map with a number of churches pinpointed. That may help. 3. Mary Beth, What would you like to look for first? I'd try to start at the beginning and establish when the parents arrived, married, and where they lived. What are the sources for the information you have? Kings County started keeping birth records in 1847, so you'd have to rely on church records, if they exist, to find your ggrandfather's birth. What about Most Holy Trinity Church now at Montrose and Ewen, a German parish originally established in 1841? ( http://www.mhtbrooklyn.org/en_history.htm) Have you checked resource at this site? http://www.germangenealogygroup.com/Default.htm And this one: https://www.familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Brooklyn,_New_York?
