    3. There are a Bertram and Sylvia "Lazarue," together with a 15-year-old son named "Grean," living in 1940 in Manhattan, on W. 135th St. No Henrietta, though. There're in ED 31-1115, p. 11A, lines 9-11. On Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 2:23 PM, Barbara Kiersh <[email protected]>wrote: > Hi All, > > So far, I'm less than enthusiastic about the 1940 census. 1. [BKLYN] please help me find my parents
    2. Barbara Kiersh
    3. Hi All,   So far, I'm less than enthusiastic about the 1940 census.  I've found several of my family members and the biggest revelation so far is who was living with who, and where they were living.  Other than that - nothing.  Well, my parents have disappeared along with my grandmother.  I'm 99.9% sure they were living in the Bronx.  My father's family were staunch Bronxites, although they did venture out to other boroughs for a bit.  I was born in the Bronx in 1941.  My grandmother died in 1942.  She lived with my parents. (Don't ask!)  I have my grandmother's death cert and found the correct cenus page through Steve Morse.  The family is not at that address.  I can't find them by indexed name, although I've tried various spellings. I'm stumped.    I understand there are supplementary pages - 61A and 81A.  Maybe they're on one of those pages, as I'm sure both my working parents wouldn't be home during the day.  Although my grandmother should have been.  Maybe not.  How do you find those supplementary pages?  The ED on Ancestry doesn't seem to include those.    My parents names are Bert and Sylvia Lazarus.  My grandmother is Henrietta Lazarus.  The address they were living at when my grandmother died was 84 W. 188th St, Bronx, NY.  Sorry, I didn't keep the ED since I didn't find them on the census page.    Any help would be appreciated.   Barbara Kiersh Jacksonville, FL

    3. I have been reading about how certain people may have been purposefully left out of the 1940 Census. I have not been able to find many of my Afro-American family in the 1940 Kings County, New York Census. I used the index on Ancestry.com, and did not find them, then I went page, by page, through the ED where that house was located without success. When I got to the ED page where the address should have been, I found an address for the House before where they lived, and the house number past where they lived, but their address was missing. Larry

Browsing by ED number is easiest at the government site, and much faster if you download the whole ED, unless you have very limited bandwidth. http://1940census.archives.gov/getting-started/ > Can I find anyone in queens or brooklyn by name? Maybe, name search is available for the whole state of New York for free at Ancestry.com, and the images are free as well: http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=2442 But indicate the state of New York in the dropdown and choose exact match, or you could get results from other states as well. > Can I find by the enumeration district??? You can try, I am not sure how good the search engine is with using that as criteria in a name search, you would have to experiment. > Tried Steve morse for the enumeration district but couldnt get to the > page.... If none of the above suggestions help, you will need to provide more details so people can diagnose why you could not get to the page. It is not clear how far you got or which page you could not get to. If you are not happy with Ancestry's search engine, FamilySearch.org will soon have a name search for New York State as well. Indexing (without name search) was at 96% for NY, as of last night at FamilySearch. I have a list of all the sites carrying the 1940 census for free, including daily updates about indexing progress, on the following page, click on Free Census Records on the left menu, and scroll down to the 1940 information: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thecohens/resources.html

    1. [BKLYN] Police reports
    2. Elizabeth Martinez-Gibson
    3. Hi Everyone, I was wondering if anyone knew whether complaints filed at Police Stations, would be kept and available for genealogy purposes. Among the very few things that I recently obtained from my mother's estranged family, I found a note that my grandfather wrote indicating that he called a specific police station to file a police report about a threat from my grandmother. I was wondering if there might be a way to get hold of this report. It was in 1948, so I don't know if there would be some kind of archives for this...or even if I would be able to request such a thing. Do any of you know? Thanks, Liz

    1. [BKLYN] Link to MARRIAGE CERTS held by Muni Archives???
    2. Dear Don Eckerle, from GGG, Don, I know volunteer transcriptions by GGG and IGG [also included on Steve Morse] include marriage certificates dates later than 1929. But, "where's the beef?" Where's the up to date link to the holdings of the NYC Municipal Archives that states the years of vital records they hold? The only one I can find online is outdated then. I phoned there yesterday and they closed the phones early for the day. I'm seeking a link to availability of all BMDs available at NYC Muni Arch to provide all readers with the correct information. Sincerely, Barb Metro NYC Researcher, who has submitted absent or corrections of names to you for past transcriptions. ============== [email protected] writes: > > > >From the Municipal Archives web site > > CITY/BOROUGH > Years Available *Check at least one borough to search > > June 1847-1848; July 1853-1937 Manhattan (New York County) > 1866-1937 Brooklyn (Kings County) > * 1898-1937 The Bronx (Bronx County) > * 1898-1937 Queens (Queens County) > * 1898-1937 Staten Island (Richmond County) >

    3. I go to Italiangen.org and find the marriages then I order the certificate through LDS in Salt Lake for $2. Is there something more I am missing that is available from the Municipal Archives IF I wanted to spend a fortune to get into the MA for the day not to mention the effort it takes to go there and research? I could be wrong but I thought that Italiangen.org physically went into the Municipal Archives and catalogued then transcribed all the marriages they have on their site which is up to 1937. BTW Steven Morse has on his site an engine that will convert the certificate numbers you find on Italiangen.org into the LDS film numbers required when you order a certificate found on Italinagen.org from LDS in Salt Lake. Hope this helps.
