According to the publication, "The New York Foundling Hospital; An Index to Its Federal, State and Local Census Records (1870-1925)" by Carolee R. Inskeep, The Foundling Asylum was located at 17 East 12th Street, NY, NY. Census was conducted on July 2, 1870, Ward No. 15, Election District No. 10. Unfortunately, for this particular census, the book only lists the names of the Sisters of Charity and Servants. It does mention that there were 34 White Female "Foundlings" born in New York, and 11 White Male "Foundlings" born in New York. It further says, "The enumerator did not make individual entries for children." By 1880 The Foundling Asylum was located at 175 East 68th Street, NY, NY. Supervisors District No. 1, Election District No. 594. Here the "inmates" are enumerated but unfortunately I do not see a Laura Ellsworth Britton. Please contact me if I can be of further help. Good luck to you.
