    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/JRB.2ACE/1493.1 Message Board Post: On 8/8/04 (7:49:18 PM MDT), as part of a posting to the Bronx County Ancestry Board that was 'gatewayed' to [email protected], John Hannigan ([email protected]) asked, "My ancestors came to the US in the middle 1860 and settled in Morrisania - the predecessor of the Bronx. At the time it was part of Westchester County - if my history lesson is correct. They married in between 1865-1868 and are listed in the 1870 Census (August 13, 1870) with a 2-year old daughter. I have contacted DORIS, NYC without success. Question 1 - Where would I possibly find a marriage license and birth certificate? In 1880 Census (June 8, 1880) they are at 149th Street in NYC. There are 5 children listed ranging from 3-11 years old. I have contacted DORIS, NYC without success. Question 2 -- Where would I get birth certificates for the children. Two additional children were born before the father passed away in 1884. I have the death certificate from DORIS, NYC - but there are not birth records recorded at DORIS, NYC for my ancestors." The Bronx was annexed by the City and County of New York from Westchester County as two separate annexations at two separate times: the western Bronx in 1873 and the eastern Bronx in 1895. The Town of Morrisania was in the western Bronx (west of the Bronx River) and hence was no longer part of Westchester County AFTER 1873. Thus, the records should be with NYC, and you may want to check with the Bronx Historical Society for their advice The Bronx County Historical Society 3309 Bainbridge Avenue New York, NY 10467 Tel: 718/881-8900 eMail: ????? http://www.bronxhistoricalsociety.org/index86.html Just in case, you may also want to check with the County Clerk of Westchester County: Office of the Westchester County Clerk 110 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., White Plains, New York 10601 Tel: 914/995-3080 Fax: 914/???-???? eMail: [email protected] http://www.westchesterclerk.com/ I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting.
