As I recall, the Washington Heights neighborhood was German Jews and the Yorkville neighborhood was German Christians. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. It is an abbreviation of L'shannah tovah tikatev v'taihatem (May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year). This year, Rosh ha Shannah begins at sunset on Wednesday, September 15 on the civil calendar.
