Author: JFS2008 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.bronx/3493.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The last name is Flood. First names would be Andrew and wife is Annie (although she was reported as Anna in 1920 which I believe is a mistake). I do know exactly where they were living as the house was in the family for about 100 years until it was sold about 10 years ago. But, what is an ED # and what would I do with that? As you can tell I am new to this, and while I did find the 1900, 1920 & 1930 census easily, the 1910 one has me baffled. Thanks again. If you have a 1910 address, you can translate that to an ED # for the Bronx 1910 census.... Have you tried city directories for 1910 to fine out where they were living? Author: JFS2008 Surnames: Flood Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.bronx/3493/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I hope you all don't mind my asking these questions, but you will save me a lot of time trying to figure it all out by myself. Anyway, I got a lot of information about my great-grandparents from the 1900 & 1920 Bronx Census. My great-grandfather died some time between 1900 & 1920 because great-grandma is listed as a widow. I am unable to locate his name on the death certificate website that was included in yesterday's link to German geneology, but my family has a history of giving one name at birth & using another. I'm also not able to find any information about my family from the 1910 census on ancestry.com. Is there a better on line site to find 1910 census information and/or death certificates? Thanks again for all your help. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I was able to find wedding date info for my grandparents & I believe I have now found a death info on my great-grandmother. 19 year old James Flood may very well be my great-uncle as he was born in 1904 so the dates and age adds ups. Why he would be roller skating in NYC in December baffles me but that may be another family tale. Thanks again for all your help. I am loving this site & my new hobby!! Ancestry does not cover that period with the full paper and I could not find a listing for that name in Ancestry's historical collection of BMD notices in the NY Times. You might want to check out the death index site for any other possibilities. There was another James 12 years old but he died in Manhattan in 1919. Also a Thomas Flood, age 19, died in Manhattan in 1916. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: BobNY Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.bronx/3492.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Sorry, but cars were not rare at that time. Ford Motor Company was organized in June 1903 and sold its first car on the following July 23. The company produced 1,700 cars during its first full year of business. Henry Ford produced the Model T to be an economical car for the average American. By 1920 Ford sold over a million cars. In New York State alone, there were over 682,000 vehicles registered in 1920. And, your man is about 20 years too late to be one of the first auto fatalities in NYC. The first to have the dubious honor of being killed by an automobile in NYC was Henry Hale Bliss. On September 9, 1899 he was disembarking from a streetcar at West 74th Street and Central Park West in New York City, when an electric-powered taxicab (Automobile No. 43) struck him and crushed his head and chest. He died from his injuries the next morning. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. One of my grandfather's brothers was killed at a young age (teenager? or early 20's?) by at car at or near the Bronx Zoo. He was roller skating at the time and my father told me apparently it was a big newspaper story since cars were so rare at that time. I believe he may be one of the first, if not the first person, killed by a car in NYC - not sure how true that is. How would I go about searching New York/Bronx newspapers probably sometime around 1920 for this story? Thanks for any help or suggestions. I've didn't realize you can "walk" down the street. However, just be careful about the address. I noticed that my cousin's Edison Ave address came up next to PS72's playground and not where it should be. Luckily I know the area well enough to find the house. Tried it on my 2121 Paulding Ave address and it wouldn't show the Paulding Ave side, only the Lydig Ave side. Oh well. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Their last name was Tessel. The orphanage records we found list an "Aunt Lerner" as the contact person for the boys. She lived at 874 Longwood Avenue in the Bronx. Does anyone know who this may be? We are wondering what her relationship was to the family as we'd never heard of Lerner's in the family before. The Tessel family used to live in Kremenets, Russia (now Ukraine) before moving to Odessa and then finally New York. Thanks for any leads! Author: BobNY Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.bronx/3488.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: It is actualy not a silly question. But, it does belong to one of those series of issues regarding place name changes. First, you have to decide how you are going to handle a location that has changed its name. Before 1914, there was no Bronx County. Most of what we currently refer to as the Bronx was in New York County, Borough of the Bronx between 1898 and 1914. Before 1898, there was no Borough of the Bronx. Those areas annexed from Westchester County between 1874 and 1895 were known as the Annexed District.
