He was a bridge builder in NYC, married to Marie Anne Johannson, with whom he had two children: Elsa & William Robert (b.1921). He left the family sometime during the 1920's and his children were placed at the Leake & Watts Half Orphanage. I believe William was there until about 1933. Elsa was living with Johannson relatives in 1930. Marie remarried to Major Reginald Reagen. Any information would be appreciated! Registered for the draft on April 27, 1942. There was an article in the NY Times, Feb 8, 1934, p. 22. He fractured his left arm fighting a fire at 349 E 118 Street in Manhattan. The article mentined his home address: 454 E. 137th Street, Bronx. He was a member of Engine Co. 35. Susan McMahon, age 22, arrived in NY on the S.S. Celtic on April 26, 1913, occupation: servant. Susan intended to join her aunt Bess Honan at 26 48th Street, Pittsburgh, PA. Griffth's Valuation, a mid-19th century tax record that serves as a census substitute, indicates that the McMahon and Mescall families occupied properties in the townland of Brisla, East in the civil parish of Kilmacduane, Union of Kilrush, Barony of Moyarta, County Clare, Ireland. That makes sense because they bought/built the house in the early 1900s. Hunt Avenue is actually 2 blocks away from Wallace. On the 1920 census, they are listed as living on Holland Avenue (which is around the block) but with the same house number as Wallace. This I believe is an error by the census taker and he simply wrote the wrong street down. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. But look at the 1910 page where the Floods are living. The street in the margin is not Hunt Ave but (looks like) Wallace Ave. I don't know if these people moved in the interim or the enumerator just has the wrong street. I don't recall seeing any street name changes involving Hunt Ave on your website but I only looked quickly at that. If they moved, then I just got lucky that they were still in the same ED. I can certainly attest to the usefulness of your search utilities. Thanks for all the tools. Best regards, Margaret Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I found Andrew and Annie in 1900 and saw the Hunt Av street, but no house number.... but there was only one ED # in 1910 that had Hunt Avenue in it.... ED #1476. I scanned through the schedule pages at low resolution, but didn't see the Hunt Ave entry.... but many of the pages are borderline legible. My next step was to advise the person to go through the schedule pages slowly. Besides the databases I generate for the One Step site, I have ED maps scanned on my hard drive for most of the large cities in the US from 1900 through 1940 now. So there are other options to answer such a query, once we know where the person was located. I always like these sorts of queries as it's an opportunity for me to test our databases and search utilities. Flood is still alive. You will find them in the Bronx Assembly District 32 Enumeration District 1476. This ED is barely legible but they are at the top of Sheet 3B (Image number 6 once you get to the AD and ED.) AD equals Assembly District and ED means either Enumeration District or Election District depending on which census you are looking at. That is how cities are divided up just like your voting districts. You should learn about some of the tools as Joel was suggesting. The web site he works on is called stevemorse.org and it has wonderful tools. Without those tools I would not have found your family. Your family was on Hunt Ave in the 1900 census. Using that address and this tool http://stevemorse.org/census/index.html I was able to find that it was District 1476. Then I just went page by page. You can use the stevemorse.org site to search several other sites, including Ancestry. It is a much more powerful search engine. You should use it to re-search the death indexes for Andrew. Good luck. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Its what an enumerator would cover during the census. Its number is at the upper right of your census sheets, and it would be part of your documentation/citation for each of your records. I can't find in the years you show the Floods in the US Census in the Bronx. Tell me exactly where they were in 1920. Were they in Bronx County? What is the ED # of the 1920 ED. What is written at the top of the 1920 census sheet in terms of State, County, ED # and sheet # (e.g. 1A, 1B) and exactly what names they are shown as in 1920 The left column of the 1920 census schedule you have will have the street name, and the next column the house/address number. Is that your address? If so, then find that address at stevemorse.org.... the large city ED finder for 1910.... to find the ED #. It's then possible to go to that ED # on Ancestry, and find the address on a census page...and see who is living at that address to see if they skipped your target family or mangled the names.
