I'm a regular poster to BronxBoard.com. I also have the dedication book and was the one who posted the class photos from that book. The photo to which I am referring was in a newspaper. I remember looking at it with my mother. I just can't remember which one. The Parkchester paper was the Bronx Press Review. Not sure if it's being published under another name such as the Bronx Times. I have thought of calling the school but just haven't gotten around to it. Have you tried www.bronxboard.com? I know they have some class pictures for 1954 and later. Also have you asked the parish or school? I would think there is probably a dedication book. Another newspaper possibility may be the Parkchester Press or Parkchester Review; I'm not sure of the name and I believe it stopped publishing a long time ago. I was born in Fordham Hospital many years ago, and have been searching for a 1940's photo of Snake Hill 184t St. and Webster Avenue. Do you have any advice on how to get one? I couldn't download the map, but it is one I probably have. Marble Hill is across Harlem River from Baker Field (Columbia University). The river feeds into the Hudson River. I couldn't come up with a John Jonas on the 1900 federal census on Ancestry and it would be the only one John Jonas would be listed since he died before 1910 and wasn't born until after 1890, of which there isn't much because a lot of the records of that census were lost in a fire. I searched New York County and was looking for lists of voting districts. I looked at each one until I spotted Spuyten Duyvil. There was Spuyten Duyvil Road, but it didn't reveal anything. I went through New York Times obits for 1907 but found nothing. I think this is one I won't be able to track down, since the only living relative of John Jonas doesn't! know that much. Thanks for your interest. I appreciate it. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: WalterGreenspan Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.bronx/3499.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Could you be looking at Marble Hill? Marble Hill is an area in the southwest Bronx that is not in the Bronx but is part of New York County and has been part of New York County since November 1, 1683 when New York County was created. When city authorities widened the Spuyten Duyvil Creek -- it connects the Hudson River to the Harlem River (the year slips my mind for the moment), the creek bed lay just to the north and east of Marble Hill. Rather than widen this section of the Creek, the engineers dug a new channel to the west of the existing "creek", resulting in Marble Hill appearing to be in the Bronx when one looks at a current map. But the Marble Hillers remain part of New York County (they vote for the New York County D.A. and are called to serve on New York County juries, not Bronx County juries). Spuyten Duyvil is a neighborhood to the immediate west of Marble Hill and to the immediate south of Riverdale. For a map showing the neighborhoods in the Bronx (including a dashed line where Marble Hill is located): http://www.angelfire.com/ny/Bx/map.gif I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting.
