    1. [NYBRONX] Looking for: JENNIE OR YVONNE ORTIZ/FREDO/COLON
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: EleniColon Surnames: Ortiz, Fredo, Colon Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.bronx/3505/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm looking for my grandmother or aunt. Jennie had four children. The first one was Yvonne and the other three were with my grandfather, Rafael Colon. The three children's names are: Awilda Colon, Ricardo (my father) Colon, and Elsa Colon. All three were born in Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, NY. The only information I have is that they all lived in the Bronx, New York and Jennie left all three children with my grandfather and the Colon family. She then took Yvonne (my aunt) and disappeared. Jennie gave two surnames between the three birth certificates of the children she had with Rafael. They were Ortiz and Fredo. Jennie disappeared around 1958. We are unsure what surname Yvonne was given. Yvonne should be around the age of 57 (plus or minus 3 years). If you have ANY information, please contact me IMMEDIATELY at eleni_colon@hotmail.com. Reply too! :) Thanks!!! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. You're right, deaths aren't limited, but births are. The problem is that the death record, except for early records, can be obtained from the SS records. We can find no family or person information. Dorothea On 12/7/2008 3:00:15 PM, BobClancy (clancspa@earthlink.net) wrote: > All 5 boros are included. 1. [NYBRONX] Surrogate Court records for Bronx County and New York County
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: WalterGreenspan Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.bronx/3504.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Manhattan is not a county: Manhattan is a borough (administrative district) of New York City. The NYC Borough of Manhattan is coterminous with the New York State County of New York. Circa 1898 - 1913, the Borough of Manhattan and the Borough of the Bronx were jointly coterminous with New York County. In 1914, Bronx County, New York's 62nd and youngest county, seceded from New York County and, since that date, the Borough of the Bronx is coterminous with Bronx County. Thus, you should look at Surrogate Court records for Bronx County and New York County, but be aware the fee for one probate file lookup is $90. There are also per page copy fees, and there may be a difference between fees charged for certified and uncertified copies, if available. Author: cis1998 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.bronx/3504.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: You should look at Surrogate Court records both in the Bronx and Manhattan. The Bronx did not become a county in its own right until 1914, and for administrative purposes it was considered part of Manhattan until 1914. I saw some of your other postings where you said Andrew Flood likely died between 1910 and 1920, and that the house on Wallace Avenue in the Bronx was in the family for 100 years. If his estate involved real estate, there should have been a will filed either in Surrogate Court in Manhattan (1910-1914) or the Bronx (1915-1920). Surrogate Court has jurisdiction where the residence of the deceased was. Andrew may very well have died completely outside the five boroughs. No matter. If he left a will or his widow filed for Letters of Administration, there will be a record in Surrogate Court. The record should also contain information about where and when he died. They do not have a computer for public access. Older graves must be looked up by person they are not on comupter files. I believe that you would need a date of death - don't know if approximate will do. They will only look up 3 sites while you wait. For a long list I would mail it to them and make a request. 3. The cemetery is huge so you will probably need help locating graves. You should write or call ahead and give the names and dates of death so they can look up the locations. I do not belive they are computerized. Check the office hours because I know they are only there half a day on Saturdays and not at all on Sundays. Good luck. 3. I was just at St. Raymond's in October for a funeral. I went into the office hoping that I could get a print out of who I had buried there or that there was a computer to use. No such luck. Was informed by the desk that it had to be in writing. They were rude and not helpful at all.
