    1. [NYBRONX] Westchester County Genealogical Society (NY) Upcoming Meeting
    2. Westchester County Genealogical Society (NY) Upcoming Meeting The Westchester County Genealogical Society welcomes Toni McKeen with her program titled Let City Directories Work For You on Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 10am. City Directories are very valuable and useful tools that genealogists use to track people over a span of years, especially the years falling between the takings of the census. They give you a person’s address and an occupation in a given year and several members of the same family unit who were gainfully employed will appear in the alphabetized list. Toni McKeen has been passionate about genealogy for over 20 years. Toni has been researching her huge Italian family as well as her husband’s Irish family during this time. Her research has led her to the ancestral homes of her grandparents in Sicily, Calabria, and the Amalfi Coast of Italy and she have made several trips to the "homeland" in search of documents. Ms. McKeen has taught several levels of genealogy in Founders Hall in Ridgefield, CT for more than 5 years as well as given other lectures in New York and Connecticut. This lecture will focus on the use of city directories in genealogical research. The meeting opens at 10:00 a.m. at the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 600 Broadway, Dobbs Ferry, NY. All are welcome to come to the meeting. Coffee and conversation precede the meeting at 9:30 a.m. MEETING INFO: TOPIC: LET CITY DIRECTORIES WORK FOR YOU WHEN: Saturday, MARCH 14, 2009 @ 10 a.m. WHERE: Aldersgate Methodist Church, 600 Broadway in Dobbs Ferry (across from Mercy College on route 9) For information about Westchester County Genealogical Society (Westchester Connection or Surname List), visit WCGS home page -- _http://www.rootsweb.com/~nywcgs/_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~nywcgs/) Hope to see you on Saturday!! 2. Hi Walter Thank you so much for your very quick and very helpful response........:) appreciate it. I had family in West Farms when it was in Westchester Co. abt. 1850s...trying to figure out why they were up there. Other part of family seemed to have started out in Croton on Hudson and wound up in downtown NYC by 1860 census..cannot find any record of their arrival and what was doing up there in the 1850s workwise. 2. West Farms is still called West Farms, although it is now a neighborhood in the New York City Borough of the Bronx/New York State County of Bronxm and no longer an independent town in Westchester County: In 1873, the City and County of New York annexed the "western" Bronx, which included all or parts of the Town of Kingsbridge, the Town of West Farms and the Town of Morrisania; or, in other words, the area west of the Bronx River and south of the City of Yonkers, from Westchester County. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. 2. Go to _http://www.stevemorse.org/birthday/privateeye.html_ (http://www.stevemorse.org/birthday/privateeye.html) Insert the first name and birthdate and you will get all the hits whixh have the first name and borth date. Is there any way to do a search for a person on some website with their date of birth and first name? Here's my dillemma...my grandparents divorced in 1953 (got the info from FL). I have been able to find info on my grandfather, but no one knows what happened to my grandmother. The family has tried searching for her. I tried using her married name and her maiden name.I searched both Florida (her last place of residence during the divorce) and NY, where she was born and had family. We have not been able to find her. I am thinking she might have remarried. In 1953, she was only 45 yrs. old. Considering she was born in 1908, I am assuming she is no longer living. I have tried FL marriage records and death records and I tried SSDI, but no success. I thought if there were a way to search DOB and first names...this is my last hope. **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. See yours in just 2 easy steps! 1. Re: [NYBRONX] DNA Deal
    2. Lilly Martin
    3. Hello Everyone, Just a quick explaination about the DNA test for Genealogy purposes. www.familytreedna.com The test is painless, no blood, no needles. It is done with a Swab on the inside of the cheek of your face. All done through the mail, like mail order. The test will be done by MEN only. These men must be born with the surname you are researching. This test will reveal what other men MATCH him, and will reveal certain information about the EARLIEST ancestor of this man. Male dna is passed from father to son, in an endless chain. There can be some mutations along the way, but the basic chain remains unbroken. For example: you are studying the name SMITH. Your brother was born named SMITH, and you have heard from another research named SMITH who also seems to be, on paper, of the same LINE. Your brother and this other man can both take the test, and if there is a CLOSE match, then you can know that you are on the right track. The 66 marker test is the most expensive, but tells the most. Many people start with the cheapest 12 marker test, and later you can "upgrade" to more defining tests. For example: many people in USA will find out that their earliest male ancestor was a man who lived in ancient times in England, or British Isles, or France, or Germany, maybe Scandanavia. But some might find he lived in the Middle East, or Africa, or maybe he was a Native American Indian. This type of information will come out from the test resutls, but it will not pin-point an exact location. WOMEN also can do this test, but it won't help in a SURNAME study, since the surname only remains for MALES. However, the female dna test will reveal some ethnic origins for my Mother, to her Mother, to her Mother, and on back in an endless chain of female to female only chain of ancestors. Some families have a "Family Legend" that they had a Indian Princess Great Great Grandmother. OK, this might be correct, or fantasy. One way to check this for accuracy is find a living female, who is a direct female to female line of descendancy back to the "claimed" Indian Princess. Take the test, and see if it reveals a Native American ethnicity. Best regards, Lilly Martin (researching William Gibbs and wife Sophie, who lived in Bronx in 1930 census , they were from Romania, they were Jewish. Daughters: Clare and Rose (Rowenta).) ----- Original Message ----- From: <Caffecupz@aol.com> To: <nybronx@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 26, 2009 6:36 PM Subject: Re: [NYBRONX] DNA Deal > What about females?
