Someone gave a very detailed listing on what to find on a certificate listed below but I just want to make an additional 3 points: 1 On birthplace - On some that I have seen, it has been just a country but others have given a town and country. For me, it was the birthplaces in Germany that had the town down. 2. For the person who officiated the ceremony - I have seen it both ways - just the names & address but in a few cases there has been the actually church name down. However, you can take that name of the person who officiated and go to a city directory and find out which church, he was associated with by using either the name or address. 3. The Italian Genealogy Group has compiled a database of marriages in NYC - go to One-Step Webpages by Stephen P. Morse at _http://stevemorse.org/_ (http://stevemorse.org/) Half way down the page, there is a section on Births, Deaths and other Vital Records. Go to NYC Groom Index (1864-1936) or NYC Bride Index (?-1937). With the certificate number, you can to NYC Municipal Archives on Chamber Street to get the certificate. There is no hard or fast rule about what you will find on a certificate. It depends on the bride and groom who gave the information and the person who took the information down. On the cert expect to find: -bride's and groom's names, addresses, ages, color, marital status, birthplace (usually the country if an immigrant) -groom's occupation -father's name (for both) -mother's maiden name (for both) -number of this marriage (for both) -place and date of marriage -signatures of bride and groom -witnesses' names and signatures -name, address, and signature of person officiating the ceremony (usually does not include the place, i.e. name of church)

OK, another poster specified what is on the marriage certificate so what is contained on the marriage license that is not on the certificate. Thank you. Hi Marie, Croton on Hudson and that whole area from Ossining north to Peekskill, had active brick making and quarrying industries at the time. The same industries were going on directly across the Hudson in the fertile soil of Rockland County. The resulting bricks and stone were harvested and shipped by barges to NYC for the building construction business. Many immigrant Irish and Italians were employed in both industries in Northeastern Westchester County, the Italians being the more skilled laborers and the Irish being the donkeys. In 1802, north from Croton, the US Military Academy was constructed with Hudson River stone. By 1825 construction of the Erie Canal was completed. All of these small riverfront towns participated in actively trading from NYC to Buffalo. Small hotels, taverns, and feed business lined the Hudson docks. The same quarry stone was used to build the original Sing Sing Prison "up the river" in 1828, to relieve the prison population at Newgate in Manhattan. In 1837 Construction of the Croton Dam was begun due to the ever growing need of pure water in Manhattan. By 1842 about 40 miles of water pipes transported clean water to NYC. A few decades later, another increased need for pure wanter in Manhattan, created more extensive work on the Croton Dam. This area around the Croton River was also known for its airy farms [Bordens began up there], fruit orchards, and livestock, to supply NYC as its farmlands decreased in numbers. . All of this was prior to the construction of railroads that some thirty years later traversed both banks of the Hudson. Yes, these were the days when townspeople worked together, with American made products, for the common good.
