According to the publication, "The New York Foundling Hospital; An Index to Its Federal, State and Local Census Records (1870-1925)" by Carolee R. Inskeep, The Foundling Asylum was located at 17 East 12th Street, NY, NY. Census was conducted on July 2, 1870, Ward No. 15, Election District No. 10. Unfortunately, for this particular census, the book only lists the names of the Sisters of Charity and Servants. It does mention that there were 34 White Female "Foundlings" born in New York, and 11 White Male "Foundlings" born in New York. It further says, "The enumerator did not make individual entries for children." By 1880 The Foundling Asylum was located at 175 East 68th Street, NY, NY. Supervisors District No. 1, Election District No. 594. Here the "inmates" are enumerated but unfortunately I do not see a Laura Ellsworth Britton. Please contact me if I can be of further help. Good luck to you. Would it be possible to find an obituary for the younger Hugo. I just am not positive we are talking about the same Hugo Engkvist. The Swedish relatives knew he did not get along with his parents and that is why he left. I have a photo of him in his merchant marine uniform when he left Sweden. Then of course he was in WWI. I just can't figure out the wife and child thing. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It is Featherbed Lane. I believe it got its name because women that lived there used to air out their featherbed comforters on the windowsills years ago. Marilyn

These people were my grandfather and great grandmother. Are you related to them? Do you know any more about them? They thought her name was Flory -- so when I saw Florence listed on the draft card I thought it was his wife. I keep in touch with his sister's son Reinhard in Sweden. I show Hugo coming to America via Halifax, Nova Scotia from Copenhagen, Denmark. Arrived in us Sep. 7, 1929 on ship Frederik VIII. Are you related? I am researching Hugo Ferdinand Engkvist born 4 Nov. 1892 in Helsingborg, Sweden. At age 50 he applied for naturalization on Mar 22, 1943 and was living at 1545 Jesup Ave. Bronx, NY. He married Florence who supposedly ran a nursing home. He was a caretaker. He married Sep 12, 1934. He had tatooed forearms. Are you stating that my Hugo above also married a woman named Olivia and had a son named Hugo? If so this marriage was prior to him marrying Florence. Am I understanding this correctly? All of a sudden I read of Manida, Longwood an Fox. I lived in 874, 868 and 840 Manida near Lafayette. We used to call you people down the hill, swamp people. We would roller skate down the hill past the, Monastery, Bank Note Co. and down Tiffany. That was in the late 30s and early 40s, when the area was in its' glory. Don in Oregon
