    1. Lewis Vittrey
    2. On 8/30/04 (6:19:31 AM MDT), in a posting to [email protected], Honor Conklin ([email protected]) asked, "Is there anyone doing research on Lewis (Louis) Vittrey of the Bronx area who was the second husband of Mehitable Betts in the mid to latter 1600s? I would like to have sources for information on him, especially his European origins and his occupation." Honor, this is just a guess, but possibly the Bronx County Historical Society might be of some help considering that the area that is now the Bronx (that then was part of Westchester County) had such a low population density, that any resident of the area would be easy to find in the records of that time (???): The Bronx County Historical Society 3309 Bainbridge Avenue New York, NY 10467 Tel: 718/881-8900 eMail: ????? http://www.bronxhistoricalsociety.org/index86.html Good luck. 1. A Plea for Genealogical Volunteers
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JRB.2ACE/1512 Message Board Post: Dear all, I have made this plea several times on the NYC Metro county boards with great results. My group is headed up by John Martino and we have completed and are working on several major databases for the NYC Metro area. Below are some of the projects we have finished and/or are nearing completion. 1-The Southern District Naturalizations for NARA covering Manhattan and the Bronx and recorded in Federal Courts. (completed) 2-The Bronx Naturalizations (completed) 3-NYC Manhattan Death index 1891-1900 (completed) 4-NYC All-Boros death index 1900-1911 (completed) 5-NYC All-Boro death index 1912-1919 (completed but still to be posted) 6-Brooklyn & Manhattan Grooms index 1895-1897 (completed but still has to be posted) 7-All Boro grooms index 1908-1936 (completed but still has to be posted), 1897-1907 in progress. 8-Nassau & Suffolk counties naturalization indices (completed) 9-Brooklyn Brides index up to 1937 (nearing completion) 10- All Boro death index 1920-1929 (coming soon) 11-Eastern District naturalizations for NARA covering Brooklyn, Queens, Richmond up to 1926 (nearing completion) 12-Eastern District Naturalizations from 1927 on up (still to be started) All of these indices are or will be available at the Italian Genealogy Groups website at www.italiangen.org and the best part, we insist on these things be free to all genealogists. Now for my plea. We need numerous volunteers to help with these projects. All of it can be done at your home in the comfort of your computer chair. All you need to have is some reasonable typing skills and a spreadsheet program on your computer (Excel or Works do great), a passion for genealogy and a desire to "give a little back" to this passion. I won't lie to you, the work is easy but tedious so we need dedicated volunteers. If you think you would like to help, you can contact John Martino directly at [email protected] and let him know. We can have some of those Eastern District Index pages in your hands in a matter of days. John will be able to answer any questions you may have. Thank you for listening. Tony

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JRB.2ACE/1510 Message Board Post: OK, the pain in the neck is back and asking for more volunteers. For those of you that don't know it, the Eastern District Naturalization project for the years up to 1926 is just about complete and is in the hands of the typists-volunteers. The next phase will be from 1927-1954 and this will be a monstrous project. Many volunteers will be needed. Here is your chance to give a little back to this passion. The work can be done in the comfort of your own home at your computer desk. A "stack" of photostated sheets will be sent to you for you to make the entries into a database. All you need is a computer and a spreadsheet program (Works, Excel etc) and begin typing. I'm not going to lie to you, the work is not hard but very tedious but with some patience, typing skills and decent vision can be accomplished very easily. If you are interested, you can email me direct at [email protected] or our leader, John Martino at [email protected] for further details. A sample page of the work to be typed is attached here. Thank you in advance. Tony

Over a quarter of million names. 2-Death index all boros from 1912-1919. This will be added to the already available death indices from 1891-1911. 3-NARA Eastern District naturalization up to 1926 covering Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island etc. As usual, we need more volunteers. All of this work is being done by our volunteers, amazing. I don't think any other state is doing the work that is getting done in NYC. Let's go folks, step up to the plate. Just about all of this can be done in the comfort of your home at your computer desk. Don't be shy. Keep in mind, unlike the commercial genealogy site, all of these databases are available for FREE though spending the $20 annually to join the IGG will make the group stronger it is not necessary. These new additions are very close to completetion and are just waiting merger and conversion to Access. Keep an eye on our website at www.Italiangen.org Tony

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/JRB.2ACE/1506.1 Message Board Post: On 8/21/04 (6:37:04 PM MDT), in a posting to the Bronx County Ancestry Board that was 'gatewayed' to [email protected], George W. Agnew ([email protected]) asked, "Looking for info on Edith M. Agnew, who was born in Waterbury, CT in Sept. 1892 and died in Jamica, Queens, NY in Dec. 1980. Her last known address was in Hollis, LI, Jamaica, Queens, NY. She worked until retiring for Long Island Press. She may have had relative living in Riverside, Bronx, NY." First, for an obit, etc., etc., you may want to contact the Queens Borough Public Library: Queens Borough Public Library 89-11 Merrick Boulevard New York (Jamaica P.O.), NY 11432 Tel: 718/990-0700 Fax: 718/???-???? Contact information: http://www.queenslibrary.org/about/gen_info.asp Home page: http://www.queenslibrary.org/ Second, while Riverdale is a neighborhood in the Bronx, Riverside is a hamlet in the Town of Southampton in Suffolk County. Riverside is one of those many communities on Long Island where none of the places in Riverside have a "Riverside, NY" mailing address. The pertinent geography: Riverside is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the northwest section of the Town of Southampton), in the southeast part of Suffolk County, along the Southampton/Riverhead and the Southampton/Brookhaven town lines. There are currently 6 villages (incorporated municipalities) and 16 hamlets all or partly in the Town of Southampton. There are no cities and 10 towns in Suffolk County. There are 2 Indian reservations in Suffolk County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Riverside in the Town of Southampton is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Riverhead in the Town of Riverhead (the Southampton/Riverhead town line); on the east by the Hamlet of Flanders; on the south by the Hamlet of Westhampton; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Calverton partly in the Town of Brookhaven and partly in the Town of Riverhead (the Southampton/Brookhaven and the Southampton/Riverhead town line). And, as occurs in every one of Suffolk County's 156 communities (0 cities, 31 villages and 125 hamlets), the Hamlet of Riverside has a different border than does the "Riverside, NY" postal zone. In this case, there is no "Riverside, NY" postal zone and all places in the Hamlet of Riverside have a "Riverhead, NY" mailing address. For those who have their copy of the 2003 or earlier edition of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Hamlet of Riverside in the Town of Southampton, Suffolk County on pages 15 & 28 (map) and 29 (population estimate). I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. L'Shannah Tovah* & Happy 5765, Walter Greenspan * L'Shannah Tovah (li-SHAH-nuh TOH-vuh; li-shah-NAH toh-VAH) Hebrew. Lit. for a good year. Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JRB.2ACE/1505 Message Board Post: The Sun, San Bernardino, CA - Wednesday, August 18, 2004 DONALD HAROLD ROSE dedicated more than 40 years of his life to helping people at his Del Rosa Medical Clinic. Rose, a 70-year San Bernardino resident, died August 2 at Loma Linda University Community Hospital after battling heart disease. He was 76. “His life was medicine – it was the No. 1 thing,” said his son, Damon Rose, of San Bernardino. Rose was born June 8, 1928 in the Bronx, New York. In 1936, his family moved to San Bernardino, where his father opened an auto parts store. At 16, Rose graduated from San Bernardino High School and went on to earn several degrees from UC Berkeley, including a master’s in history. While in college, Rose worked as a ballroom dance instructor and a professional dancer. He even appeared as a background dancer in Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly movies, Rose’s son said. He earned an osteopathic degree from UC Irvine and later received a medical degree from UCLA. He did his surgery residencies in Iowa and Vienna, Austria. Rose founded his private practice on Del Rosa Avenue in the early 196t0s. He also founded the Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice and help found Loma Linda Community Hospital, which now is Loma Linda University Community Medical Center. In addition, he served on the San Bernardino County Museum Commission, was a professor at San Bernardino Valley College and was affiliated with a number of hospitals and medical organizations. Patients and friends described him as very passionate about his profession and being able to help people, Damon Rose said. Donald Rose was appointed by President Ronald Regan in the early 1980s to be an emissary to the American ambassador to Switzerland and was later appointed as a special ambassador for the United Nations on world health care, his son said. Outside of work, Rose enjoyed skiing, swimming and riding his Arabian stallion. “He enjoyed sunshine and the beach,” Damon Rose said. “He loved traveling – he’d been all over the world. And he especially liked working in his garden.” When he began having serious heart problems about six months ago, Rose closed his 43-year-old clinic. Other survivors include a son, Sven Rose of Los Angeles, CA; a sister, Betty Russel of Pal Springs; and one granddaughter. Services were held. Aaron Cremation and Burial Services/Mark B. Shaw Chapel in San Bernardino handled the arrangements. NOTE: Submitter is not related in any way to deceased. Obituary is provided for genealogical interest only.
