Twice I've tried to get the death certificate for my grandfather-in-law who died in the Bronx 1951. The first time the NY Dept of Health said I couldn't have it because I wasn't a direct descendant. The second time my husband requested it and stated he wanted it for medical history (true) and he was denied because he didn't know name of Michael Guiliani's parents or his Social Security Number. My husband is the only living direct descendant so there's no one who has this information. Does anyone have any clue how to work around this absurd process?

Tracing your information. It looks like you have Isidor in 1910 Census...20 years old, a painter, in New York on the Census...single...comes into US in 1904. I can find the family in 1930....Ysador now 41 and Yetter. They got married about 1908 as their oldest is born in 1909. Have you tried for their marriage certificate? Yetter came to the US in 1900... she got married when she was 16. Ysador says he came to the US in 1905...so consistent. Perhaps if not New York (and I tried the Morse One Step site Ellis Island Search Engine) maybe Philadelphia, or through Canada? Another 1930 item is that Ysador says he is naturalized. Although I couldn't find him on the online indexes.... have you tried the NY NARA? Have you tried Voter Registration files?? I couldn't find the family in 1920....and would try for that information. Perhaps they are in a City Directory circa 1920 and you can get an address to search on for the 1920 Census district. The 1920 Census would narrow the possible date of naturalization. Do you have the death certificates of Ysador and Yetter that might tell something of their backgrounds? Were they on the Social Security System....and do you have their Social Security applications? What is on their tombstones? There may still be avenues of research that will open up other possibilities. Joel Weintraub

I don't seem to know how to find out where my Grandparents were from, although it appears that they came to N.Y. between 1902 thru 1906. I have no clue as to any relatives or how to trace them. The indexes for 1920-1929 has been added. This is a great tool to help you find those ancestors that "disappeared" between the 1920 and 1930 census'. The URL for the IGG's site is: www.Italiangen.org The next addition is the death index from 1930-1936 and I am in the process of working on 1937-1948, maybe a couple of months away from being posted. Remember, access to this info is "FREE". It does NOT pertain to just Italians. It is the complete death index. Tony
Kathy asked about Daitch Shopwell. I remember Daitch Shopwell very well. I believe these stores were located throughout the city. The store I remember best was on 181th Street in Upper Manhattan. It was a narrow store, always filled with customers. My family bought tub butter, pot cheese and other fine products there. Butter was stored in a refrigerator in a large block form. You would tell the clerk how much butter you wanted to purchase, and he would cut that amount from the brick. The clerks were so good at measuring from experience that they usually came within a dab of hitting the amount on the nose. If the amount cut was short, a little chip piece was added to the portion cut. This butter was fresh and was the best tasting butter you can imagine. Really miss that wonderful butter and good cheese. Unfortunately, I do not know anything of the Daitch family. Margaret

Hello: I have just began doing a little research on my husband's side of the family. His name is Daitch. We have heard family stories through the years that we were related to the family that owned the Daitch Dairies/Daitch Crystal Dairies/Shopwell Daitch. Of course I am doing all the "regular" research but thought maybe someone on this list would have some insight, memories, or relationship about this family or store. I also understand that this particular Daitch family is connected with a Dubin family. My husbands g grandfather is Louis Daitch born circa 1871, his son, Samuel born circa 1896. Any help would be appreciated. Kathy Daitch

Listers, I should have mentioned that I have already tried Soc, Sec. Death Index. Thank you Winnie > > Hello Listers, > I am still trying to find proof of death for my grandparents. > George J.T.CHARLES & wife Elizabeth nee Nickerson(?) were last known to live at 406 East 152nd Street, Bronx NY during the 1940s. I last saw them in 1947 after which our family was separated. Their son, Frederick lived with them. A second son, Irving & his wife Frieda lived in the same building. During this time, the older apartment houses where they lived were being torn down & the area rebuilt into projects. I have searched the NYC death indexes from the LDS until my eyes gave out. I want to know when & where they died & where they are buried. The local funeral home was G.W. Neubert on Melrose Ave,. Bronx,NY which is long gone. > Any help &/or information would be greatly appreciated. > > Regards, > Winnie in Calif.
