    1. NYC's Plaza Hotel to close April 30
    2. For those people whose ancestors may have celebrated some occasion at the Plaza, you may only have until April 30 to visit this renowned hotel to see it as your ancestors may have experienced it when they were there ... because according to the New York TIMES ... The Plaza Hotel, located across from Central Park, where the fictional character Eloise romped through the corridors inside, the fiction writer F. Scott Fitzgerald romped in the fountain outside and, more recently, where Home Alone II took place, sent the union representing its workers a letter this week making official the timetable for the hotel's closing. No one will romp at the Plaza after April 30. The real estate company that owns the Plaza says it will become a construction site on its way to becoming condominiums and stores with a far smaller hotel on the 58th Street side. The hotel has called all guests who had reservations for later than April 30 to let them know they cannot stay there, said Miki Naftali, the president and chief executive of Elad Properties, the Plaza's owner. The letter to the union, the New York Hotel and Motel Trades Council, which has organized a "Save the Plaza" campaign, said that 864 workers would lose their jobs "on or about April 30." The union wants the Landmarks Preservation Commission to designate the interior of the Plaza a landmark. The exterior has had such a designation for more than 30 years. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan

    1. Maggie Madigan - no tombstone!!..well............
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/JRB.2ACE/1527.1.1 Message Board Post: Hi Dolores! Mike Madigan(SharecropperTrio) here in Newfoundland! Karen Thomas, the wonderful woman from Ohio who inspired me to write the song about Maggie Madigan who survived the Titanic, is seeking some funds to put a small grave marker on Maggie's "unmarked" grave in Calvary Cemetary, Woodside, Queens, NY. She has appealed to family and friends to help her do this. Also the web site TIS Titanic International Society has offered to pass the hat at their next gathering. I felt it only right that I extend the chance to any Madigans/friends to do the same. As I have mentioned before, Maggie Madigan is from the same town of Askeaton, Co.Limerick, as was our great grandfather John Madigan. I'm presently working on more "family connections" with Madigans in Ireland.(more on that at another time) Ever since I wrote and published the song "Maggie Madigan-Titanic Survivor" as a bonus song on our 3rd cd "Home, Boys!", events and research into this Titanic survivor have been overwhelming. Just type the above words in GOOGLE and you'll see a lot of the information over the last two and a half years. But I admire Karen Thomas for her passion and quest to find out what happened to Maggie. Sad to say she now rests in that unmarked grave. The interesting "edited" story and Maggie Madigan's picture can be quickly read at http://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/item.php/4281.html If you can find time to send Karen a small donation/contribution of any amount, she would really appreciate it. The inscription on the grave stone/plaque will read: Margaret "Maggie" Madigan-Hart-O'Shea, August 11,1890-December 14,1968, "In the Hearts of Strangers". Finally, I know we are all being asked each day of our lives for contributions to many causes, so let it just be understood that for Karen Thomas, she had a dream...a passion..to find out whatever happened to Maggie Madigan after she(Karen) visited the great Titanic exhibit in Cleveland, Ohio, touring in the USA. There she was given a replica entrance ticket to tour the exhibit which bore the name "Maggie Madigan, Third Class". Karen was amazed at the end of the exhibit to learn that Maggie was a survivor but was one of the few survivors who became lost in history these past 92 years. But now that she has been found, Karen would like to pay tribute to this remarkable Madigan by placing a small stone at her gravesite. I admire Karen and anyone else who has great passion for anything. Light tomorrow with today! Karen Thomas' address is at: 925 Glenwood St,N.E. Warren, Ohio,USA 44483 and her email is [email protected] Her phone number is:330-372-6031 If anyone else I have sent this email to is unfamiliar with the whole story, of course dropping into my web site at www.thesharecroppers.net will link you to the original story and facts and even allow you to hear the song before it was recorded on cd. At the time of the song, ironically I did NOT EVEN KNOW our great grandfaher John Madigan (like Maggie) was from Askeaton Ireland also. Fascinating discoveries ahead I'm sure!! I feel we're connected to Maggie through those Madigans. Time will tell and I'll keep ya informed. So I hope a small donation is not too much to ask. A great Askeaton web site(history, castles etc) can be found at www.askeatonbynet.com Drop in..you'll love it! Cheers, blessings and thanks....Mike Madigan in Newfoundland -da Rock!!! 8 Spruce St,Pasadena,NL Canada A0L 1K0 tel:709-686-5427 Please forward to friends...t'anks again! God luv ya!

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/JRB.2ACE/1601 Message Board Post: Hello: Does anyone know if the NYC Department of Health "whites out" Social Security Numbers from death certificates when they make copies for genealogy requests?? I have a copy of my great grandfathers death certificate from 1951. In the column for SS Numbers it is just blank. Usually if the person had no SS Number it would often say "none" I could swear that if you hold it up a certain way it looks like it is a little discolored. However, it is hard to tell from the safety paper they use. I would think that he had a SS Number as he was working during the period of time SS Numbers were issued. Just wanted to see because i want to send for a copy of his Social Security Application....however, if you dont have the number it costs a little more for the request. I dont mind that...but what i would hate is to send the money for the request and find he did not have a number. So...this is why i am inquiring regarding whether NYC-DOH does remove the numbers when processing a request. If someone could let me know i would appreciate it. My great grandfather was George S. Booth, Jr and he died in Kings County Hospital on June 26, 1951. Thanks, JIM BOOTH Highland Mills, Orange County, NY [email protected]
