Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JRB.2ACE/1619.1 Message Board Post: It varies by how much information you give and how accurate the information is. Under FOIA, the agency has 5 business days within which to acknowledge your request. That acknowledgement may range from the actual info to telling you that they have a tremendous backlog and it might take 6-8 months to search and retrieve the file.

I have narrowed down to two the William Leibowitzs on the Italian website Bronx petition index that Joel mentioned, but don't know which is the correct one. So it would probably be better to request it from the INS files since you say they have all the records and will search by name, birthdate and place. Do you know approximately how long it takes to receive the records? Thanks again for your help. Carol

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JRB.2ACE/1618.1.1.1.2 Message Board Post: USCIS (formerly INS) files, known as C-Files, include a duplicate copy of all naturalization records dated after September 26, 1906. All C-Files contain at least a copy of the Declaration of Intention to become a US Citizen (to 1952), Petition for Naturalization, and Certificate of Naturalization. Occasional files contain additional documents or correspondence. C-Files include all US naturalizations from all States and Territories, and from all courts (Federal, State, and local). INS maintains an index to the C-Files, and can retrieve individual records based on name, date of birth, and place of birth. C-Files from 1906 to 1956 have been microfilmed, and are available via Freedom of Information/Privacy Act request to INS Headquarters in Washington, D.C. Infomation about making a request is found here: http://uscis.gov/graphics/aboutus/foia/request.htm

Surnames: LIEBOWITZ, LIEBOVITZ, LEBOWITZ Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JRB.2ACE/1618.1.1.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Joel--thanks for your follow-up message. I have seen that info. about Wolf and family being detained due to his senility on the Ellis Island website (I copied it from microfilm at the FHC also). His granddaughter was only 7 when he passed away in 1924, but doesn't remember him being senile. Also on the 1910 census he is listed as William Lebowitz in ward 17 of Manhattan with the occupation of tobacco cutter (his age and his wife's age are way off). And in 1920 he is shown as a salesman. So possibly he had a mild case of senility and could still work, or it was a mistake or the word had a somewhat different meaning 100 yrs. ago. Other than that does the family on that passenger list in July, 1901 look like the right one to you? (The ages are pretty close). I haven't found any other close matches, but the spelling could be a problem. Oh, and I need to correct a mistake I made in my original posting--they lived at 1044 Kelly St. and were family 106. I had put 106 Kelly. Thanks again for all your help--I really appreciate it. Carol

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/JRB.2ACE/1618.1.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Just a short followup. The Wolf Leibovitz family arriving July 7, 1901 is on image 443 at the Ellis Island website. There is an X to the left of their names which usually signifies that they were held. On image 456 the family is shown as detained...and the reason is "Senility, Wolf"...but after a day they were apparently released. Unfortunately the entire family is shown on one line instead of separately showing each of them, and there is no indication if they were released to a particular individual.

Surnames: LIEBOWITZ, LIEBOVITZ, LIEBOVICI Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JRB.2ACE/1618.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Joel, thanks for the info. and suggestions. Actually, I have seen the the 3 Williams on the Italian site, but it's hard to know which is the right person. Also, I did get one record already which was the wrong William--it was for a William born in the 1880's. And I don't believe he's a son of the William I'm looling for. William's Roumanian name was Wolf or Wolfe Liebowitz or possibly Liebovici. The One Step site is great and I did find a Wolf and Maria Leibovitz who arrived in July, 1901. The listing is at the bottom of the page which, sadly, is torn so not all of the children's names show. There is a Ruchel, f, 15y and they had a daughter Rose about that age in NY. Then Taub..... f, 8y and they had Tillie about that age. Then a 4y male, name very difficult to read, maybe Isi... They had Irving about that age. Then one more child--name, sex and age not shown. They had a daughter Pauline born 1899 or 1900. (Also 3 older children, Newman, David and Esther that must have come earlier--maybe before Ellis Island). The passenger list shows they were going to a son D. Liebovitz in Brooklyn. This is actually the family of an older friend of mine that I am trying to help. She would really like to find the passenger list. William and Mary or Mariam were her grandparents and she isn't sure this family on the passenger list is the correct family. So that's why I'm trying to find the naturalization record which, hopefully, would tell when they came and the name of the ship. The arrival year shown in the various census years for William and the children don't agree. Some show 1900 or 1902 and I haven't found two of them in 1920. Thanks again for all your help. I'll follow-up on your suggestions. Carol
