Does anyone know where and how to research a birth when the counties changed over the years. For instance, in the 1875 State Census, it says that James Caldwell was born in Wyoming County, but Wyoming County did not exist yet. I can only assume that in 1875 the area he was born in was in Wyoming County. Other information has said he was born in Allegany County. I would love to find out more about his parents and siblings, but am not sure what direction to go. I spoke to a Historian in Wyoming County and he said that Pike, Eagle and Genesee Falls were a part of Allegany County at one time. They are now a part of Wyoming County.
