Since the German "a" sounds more like "ah" in English, the spelling change makes sense if the record taker was going based on sound rather than actual spelling--more than likely, all things considered. Just from the few results already posted, it looks like Ottomar and Mathias are brothers. I definitely intend to poke around the sites listed a bit more when I find some time.
