    1. Re: [NYALLEGA] Andrew HAWLEY/Polly WARD, of Cuba, Allegany area
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Sharon2491 Surnames: Hawley, Ward Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.allegany/9879.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: >From History of Ontario County, NY Published 1878 Pg 31 - 36 "...Moses WARD, Sr., now eighty years of age, and a resident of Canandaigua, near Cheshire, set out the last of August, 1808, at the age of twelve years, to go from Owl Creek, in Allegheny County, to Canandaigua." In the above quote the Moses Ward Sr. mentioned is my great-great grandfather, son of Stephen Ward. He walked from Owl Creek where he had been working for his brother-in-law back home to the Canandaigua area in Ontario County, NY, south of Rochester. This is the first reference I have come upon that Moses had a married sister. Last year on the Allegany message board a responder surmised that Owl Creek may have been Oil Creek This is what the gentleman wrote: "I have never come across Owl Creek in Allegany County. There is, however, an "OIL Creek" and Oil Creek Resevoir, now called Cuba Lake. The Oil Creek area is right on the border of Allegany County and Cattaraugus County and near Hinsdale. Is it possible that the word might be Oil instead of Owl? If so, it would be Town of Cuba, Allegany County, NY." Only recently did did I come across the names of the couple Andrew Hawley and Polly Ward Hawley with just the mention of the fact that they were buried in Allegany County. I have no further information about them (children, etc.) Also, I found reference to an Andrew Hawley who was a pioneer in the Cuba area. I am guessing/hoping that the two Andrews are one and the same person and that this Andrew is possibly the husband of the sister (name unknown) of my great-great grandfather. I am hoping also that that someone in the area will have further information (census, B/M/D records, cemetery transcription, family bible records, etc.) to help me to make the connection to my Wards of Ontario County.
