Enlisted as Private Co. E, 136 Regt. N. Y. V. Infantry at Warsaw, Wyoming County, New York, August 14, 1862, for three years or during the war. Promoted to corporal, after the battle of Gettysburg, served at the front and participated in all the battles that the regiment was engaged in, which also included Sherman's march to the sea. Was discharged at the close of the war at Rochester, N.Y., June 1865. It is believed he was one of the youngest noncommissioned officers of the army, lacking a short time of being sixteen years of age.
