I've been a lurker on a couple of southern tier genealogical lists for a couple of years, only occasionally posting my interests. Recently there has been a porliferation of messages coming from one individual who characterizes herself as a professional genealogist. In my view this cheapens the list. Todays digest edition of the Cattaraugus County list had nine messages from that individual. Nine times we had to read that she sees herself as a professional genealogist. If this continues, I'll have to quit the lists. I don't care to be bombarded with incessant doses of thinly disguised and unwanted advertising. Its too bad that the lists have deteriorated to this. Tom.
Good morning. I saw the posts to the Allegany and Cattaraugus counties usgenweb lists regarding the obits posting by Susan Stahley. I can only speak for myself, but I think she was just trying to be helpful by posting the obits from the scrapbook. If I had come across a scrapbook full of obits I would have put them to the list, too, in an effort to be of assistance. I would like to add that I have taken advantage of Ms. Stahley's services as a researcher in the areas she covers and I found her research to be thorough and professional, and I certainly would not hesitate to retain her in the future should the need arise. Frankly, I could care less if she has a "tag" line after her name advising of her services. Many people use tag lines and I do not believe having such is against the rootsweb policies governing posts. Maureen M. Tom, Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so I honor yours, but I belong to at least some of the same lists as you do. I have not seen anyone blatantly advertise their services on any of the lists I read. I have seen various people use signature lines, which is not uncommon. The person you are probably making reference to, has been posting information found in newspapers, which I would think might help people, especially people that descend from the subject in the article. She just recently posted one of those articles on one of my ancestors, which has suddenly made me realize where one of their children moved to, after I lost them out of the census. I don't want to start a flame on the list, as I'm sure you don't want to, but in my opinion, there has been no blatant advertisement that anyone has done on the list. In my opinion, everyone is entitled to use signature lines. If you look at the tag line used by NYAllega or NYCattar, you will realize that there is a tag line, similiar to personal signature lines, used in every e-mail that is sent.
