These Allegany County Coles were of Dutch descent. The name was originally spelled Kool or Cool, both pronounced "Cole." He was a descendant of Jacob Barentsen Cool who was born in Amsterdam and was a very early resident at New Amsterdam(now NYC). I have the wonderful Cool genealogy prepared by Richard Benson and published by the Newberry Press, the pubishing arm of the New England Genealogical and Historical Society.
