HAINES (Nov. 1934) Fillmore lost one of its foremost citizens with the death of Charles E. HAINES, merchant and bank president, who passed away at his home Monday at the age of 75, after a brief illness. Mr. HAINES had been in business here over 54 years and because of his prominence in town and county political matters, and interest in local civic affairs, was widely known throughout a large area. He is survived by his wife Bertha, a brother W.G. HAINES of Nunda, and several nieces and nephews. Charles E. HAINES was born in the town of Nunda, come to Fillmore when but 21 years of age and engaged to work for the late Wm. P. BROOKS, who conducted a general store. Later he formed a partnership with his brother, the late Frank E. HAINES, also of Fillmore. The firm purchased Mr. BROOKS' interest in the store and finally Mr. HAINES bought out his brother's interest and conducted the large general store here in his own right until the time of his death. About the turn of the century, he entered the political arena, first holding the office of town clerk. He served as supervisor of the town of Hume for several terms and during the latter part of his encumbency was chairman of the Allegany County Board of Supervisors, relinquishing the office because of ill health. Mr. HAINES was Allegany County committeeman at the time of his death. In 1920 he was elected president of the State Bank of Fillmore, which office he continued to hold during the remainder of his life. He had been largely instrumental in bringing this village bank to a position of trust and importance. Funeral services were held at his late home Thursday at two p.m. Revs. C.H. NASH of Olean and N.R. SHAFFER of Erie, Pa., officiating. Burial was a made in Pine Grove Cemetery. "Charlie" HAINES, thru his business dealings and banking connection had established a reputation for financial integrity which might well be construed as a model for many an individual. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to the needy and scarcely a ? for some person's welfare or for the public welfare was started that his name did not head the list. In the political field and as the chairman of the county‘s board of supervisors, he revealed ability as a leader which caused him to be regarded with rare esteem by his fellows.
