Kopler 1938 John F. KOPLER, 52, long prominent as a successful undertaker in this section, died at his home in Hume Sunday morning, after an illness extending over two months. He was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage July 12 from which he never recovered and had been confined to his home until his death. In 1919 Mr. KOPLER purchased the furniture and undertaking business in Fillmore formerly conducted by the late F. A. PHILLIPS of Mrs. Lena PHILLIPS. He operated that business until 1923 when he sold out to A. R. WILES and he went into the undertaking business at Interlaken and Clyde. He returned to Fillmore and Hume in 1927, purchasing a residence in the latter place where he resided at the time of his death. For a time he held the office of justice of the peace and was also active in other town and county political affairs. Of an unusually generous disposition and humorous nature, Mr. KOPLER gained many friendships throughout the community. In his business as an undertaker he had few peers and his sympathetic manner brought comfort to innumerable homes saddened with death. Besides his wife, the surviving members of his family are: four sons, Joseph of Geneva, Raymond, Wilson and Howard of Hume, one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth RICE , Hume, three sisters, Mrs. Raymond AUSTIN, Salamanca, Mrs. Claire THOMSON, Mrs. A. J. SNIDER, Buffalo; his mother, Mrs. Julia KOPLER of Cattaraugus, also is left to mourn. Funeral services which were private were held from his late home in Hume Wednesday afternoon at one o'clock, Rev. Harold WASS and Rev. Leonard TRAVIS officiating and burial was made on the family plot at Cattaraugus. [Northern Allegany Observer obituary, transcribed by Louise Y. Mills, 2003, from Cora Lahr's scrapbooks, Fillmore, NY]
