Funeral services were held from his late home Wednesday at two o'clock, Rev. Gomer MILLS officiating and burial was made in the East Koy Cemetery under the auspices of Oriona Lodge, No. 229, F. and A. M. MR. VanDUSEN is survived by his wife, Mary, a son, George, and a grandson, Elmer, Jr., besides several nieces and cousins. Elmer VanDUSEN had resided in the village of Hume 36 years and was highway superintendent of his town for a number of years. The passing of Elmer recalls to all of us the sad experience which he went through and the fortitude he displayed in refusing to give up. About two years ago he suffered the loss of a limb and previous to this he had one amputated. However, he showed that if one will make an effort he cannot be held back, as he, with the aid of artificial limbs again took up his labors with a smile. Many thought he would be unable to get about but for the past two years, under serious handicap, he had driven his car and went along as though nothing had happened. Elmer truly exemplified to all of us a great spirit of courage and appreciation. [Northern Allegany Observer obituary, transcribed by Louise Y. Mills, 2003, from Cora Lahr's scrapbooks, Fillmore, NY]
