Sorry if I caused confusion. I have a Wellsville City Directory for 1930 that listed Jacob Backes and Jessie in paranthesis. And I thought, who the hell is that? And then in the 1940 Wellsville City Directory she is listed as a widow. I only knew of Jacob being married to Helen Wolfe. Helen dies in 1923. And Jacob died in 1939. Jacob is not listed as living with Jessie in the 1930 federal census. I don't know why. I do know that he did move about, proably chasing jobs. There was a Charles Backes. Charles' wife is still alive. Also a son, Paul. Another son, Timothy has died. I don't understand the reference to Hornell. Oh! Never mind. Yes, I think. If that's him, what the hell is he doing there? His father, Jacob Henry Backes learned the iron forging and iron moulding trade in Pittston, PA, and worked at the Pittston Stove works. Jacob Christopher Backes learned that trade too and was a foreman at McEvee (sp?) brothers in Wellsville, NY. It's a mystery why they moved to Wellsville. And a mystery why he is renting a room in Hornell when he's got a wife and 4 kids back in Wellsville. I see where you got Phillip G. Backes. It looks like Backes, but I don't think it really is. Maybe Bakes, or Baker. Wow, this is all a lot of info. Thanks again. Joe Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
