The reference in Menard to his rafting refers to some 2 dozen trips he made floating down the Allegany River from Cuba/Olean to Pittsburgh and then walking home. This was probably a way of marketing lumber, but the same trip was made by emigrants from Eastern NY to the West who rafted from Olean Point down the Allegany and Ohio on rafts sold to them by Allegany County builders. Two "postcard" photos, circa 1908, of Alonzo are attached.
