    3. I am presently researching the 1840 census for Allegany County. I have come across several places where the surname is listed as "Do.". Do any of you know if that would be an abbreviation for "ditto" to the surname that appears right above it or does it stand for something else? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give to me on this. Shirley

    3. Yes, it is the abreviation for ditto for the name above it. One thing to note, is that sometimes the "ditto-ed" names are not in the indexes.
