Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BUB.2ACI/6267 Message Board Post: FRED MERWIN On December 22, 1962, after being in failing health for the past two years, Fred MERWIN passed away at his home. He was born February 27, 1888, and was a lifelong resident of this area. His father was Marcus MERWIN and his mother was Esther SHORT MERWIN. A sister, Blanche PURDY, preceded him in death and within recent weeks so did his brother, Burt MERWIN. Besides his wife, Vera Scott Merwin, and daughter, Ann MERWIN, he is survived by a nephew, Leslie MERWIN, Fillmore, two nieces, Mary HEAD, Johnsonburg, and Julia GATGEN of Batavia and their children. In disagreement with the popular conception of success, the accumulation of material things interested him not in the least and he displayed no hesitation in expressing his views in his unique manner which was familiar to many. Maintaining his own standards throughout his lifetime, he became rather a study to some because he possessed the nearly forgotten talent of being true to himself. His philosophy might best be summed up with the last line of a poem which he wrote. "I deem the margin amply wide which lets me just get by." Funeral services were at the Kopler Funeral Home, December 24, 1962. Interment will be in Alger Cemetery. [Transcribed by Louise Y. Mills, 2003, from obituary collection of Lenora Mills, Wiscoy, NY]
