Dear fellow list members, The situation concerning this thread has been resolved privately and I would like to leave it that way, to avoid further embarrassment to anyone involved. I tend to give a wide range to what is posted. I really only have three genearl "rules" for this list and now is probably a good time to remind ourselves of them. Following is a portionof the Welcome message you received when you subscribed to this list: "Welcome to NYALLEGA-L mail list. If you have a question, please check <www.snopes.com> or email me at nyallega-l-admin@rootsweb.com While sharing a good resource or society is encouraged or even the announcment of an event, spamming is frowned upon. Tom, Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so I honor yours, but I belong to at least some of the same lists as you do. I have not seen anyone blatantly advertise their services on any of the lists I read. I have seen various people use signature lines, which is not uncommon. The person you are probably making reference to, has been posting information found in newspapers, which I would think might help people, especially people that descend from the subject in the article. She just recently posted one of those articles on one of my ancestors, which has suddenly made me realize where one of their children moved to, after I lost them out of the census. I don't want to start a flame on the list, as I'm sure you don't want to, but in my opinion, there has been no blatant advertisement that anyone has done on the list. In my opinion, everyone is entitled to use signature lines. If you look at the tag line used by NYAllega or NYCattar, you will realize that there is a tag line, similiar to personal signature lines, used in every e-mail that is sent. Good morning. I saw the posts to the Allegany and Cattaraugus counties usgenweb lists regarding the obits posting by Susan Stahley. I can only speak for myself, but I think she was just trying to be helpful by posting the obits from the scrapbook. If I had come across a scrapbook full of obits I would have put them to the list, too, in an effort to be of assistance. I would like to add that I have taken advantage of Ms. Stahley's services as a researcher in the areas she covers and I found her research to be thorough and professional, and I certainly would not hesitate to retain her in the future should the need arise. Frankly, I could care less if she has a "tag" line after her name advising of her services. Many people use tag lines and I do not believe having such is against the rootsweb policies governing posts. Maureen M. I've been a lurker on a couple of southern tier genealogical lists for a couple of years, only occasionally posting my interests. Recently there has been a porliferation of messages coming from one individual who characterizes herself as a professional genealogist. In my view this cheapens the list. Todays digest edition of the Cattaraugus County list had nine messages from that individual. Nine times we had to read that she sees herself as a professional genealogist. If this continues, I'll have to quit the lists. I don't care to be bombarded with incessant doses of thinly disguised and unwanted advertising. Its too bad that the lists have deteriorated to this. Hello, would anyone have this gentleman in their family tree?? I am looking for the names of his parents and if there were any other siblings besides him. His name is Joseph Wilson, born between 1796-99 somewhere in NY state. He married Sally Kohler or Collar around 1819 and they were living in Cayuga Co NY around 1820. I am also looking for four of their children who I cannot seem to locate. All born in NY state. John born Feb.26,1825, David or Daniel born Jan.22,1826, Sally born Aug.15,1822 and Alzina born Oct.02,1838. If you have any info plz get a hold of me at this email address, tx. stephany@mts.net Stephanie
Bill, Wow, it has been awhile! I am trying to get more into the genealogy and I have notes to send you! Seems like there was a lull for me, between working, teenagers and computer problems I do not know where the time goes! Is there some connection you have that puts our area in touch with Allegany County? I just wonder if my Stantons might connect to this one in Allegany Co.. I will send you what notes I have written and will send you what I have recorded in my FTM. -Charmaine
Dear Charmaine, I am on the NY Allegany mailing list and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a note from Charmaine. I know it had to be you because - how many Charmaines are out there. It's time I got back to Campany and as I recall you have a copy which I have little touched since I sent it to you. What I sent was rough and I will be cleaning it up. I did not bring the Campany family forward much beyond 1915 because this gets tricky with living people being mentioned in a work like this. I would love to get your comments when you get a chance. I have tough skin, so please let me know the good and the bad! I did make a quick pass through Croghan this past summer on my way from Albany to see my in-laws in Watertown. Hope you and your family are doing well. I know it must have been a long winter there, like it has been here but it does appear that spring is in the air! I am searching for any information on an Ezekiel Stanton of Belmont, NY married to Mercy Hayes Stanton. Ezekiel Stanton was born in 1804 in Strafford NH and he married Mercy of Alton NH in about1830. Ezekiel Stanton was a farmer and surveyor and did most of surveying in the Belmont and adjoining towns between 1832-1863. He had one son that I know of named Daniel Hayes Stanton of Malone NY married to Elizabeth Ware of Brownville NY. Were there other children?? He then moved to Grundy County Iowa where he died. -Charmaine Campany

Hello. I was wondering if anyone has a Ann Jannet(Janet) Witherell? Ann was born in 1825 in CT/VT and died in 1897. Somehow the Downing name is connected to Ann also. I don't know if Ann's mother was a Witherell and then married a Downing or was a Downing and then married a Witherell...... Ann lived in New York and later moved to Ashtabula County Ohio. Thank you. Jill
Try the Bolivar library in Bolivar, N.Y. They may have the obit. Regards, Tom.

Since Abigail ARMSTRONG is buried at Friendship, you might want to check the <A HREF="http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/nysnp/"> New York State Newspaper Project</A> to see if microfilm for the Friendship paper for 1913 is available on interlibrary loan. I've had good luck with ILL microfilm for the 1890s and 1920s, so there's a good chance the year you need is available, too. Chris in Colorado
Try the library at the Alfred State College...I believe it is called the Herrick Library...they have Alfred Sun newspapers on microfilm.. someone may do the lookup for you... Good luck
Hi all, I am wanting to know who is the best place (or person) to get in touch with to search any Allegany County newspapers that would have been in circulation in September of 1913. I am looking for any obituary that might have been written about my great-great grandmother, Abigail ARMSTRONG who is buried at the Mt. Hope Cemetery near Friendship, NY. Any help would be greatly appreciated. _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: advanced junk mail protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail
