My great great grandfather was Allen D. WASHBON, b. August 1849 in New York. I have found him in the census as far back as1880 where he and his family are listed in Hume, Allegany County. I don't know his parents' names, but I'm wondering if he might be related to the Edwin WASHBON in your obituary since Allen named one of his sons Edwin. Do we have a connection?

    3. Hello Everyone: I am searching for information on my PENDERGAST ancestors, James and Johanna, both born in Ireland, probably around 1800. I have a photograph of their gravestone in Angelica. I do not know the name of the cemetery, although if there is more than one in Angelica, it would probably be a Catholic cemetery. On this stone are these words: "Underneath lies the bodeys of James Pendergast and his wife Johanna who died the years 1863 to 1868. Natives of Ireland. Birthdates unknown." Does anyone have an idea of where I might look for anything I can learn about this couple? I have searched the 1860 census for Angelica, but they are not in it. There are many Pendergasts in Livingston County at this time, but these two in Allegany County are elusive. They are my g-g grandparents. Thanks for your help.

Ezekiel Stanton was born in 1804 in Strafford NH and he married Mercy of Alton NH in about1830. Ezekiel Stanton was a farmer and surveyor and did most of surveying in the Belmont and adjoining towns between 1832-1863. He had one son that I know of named Daniel Hayes Stanton of Malone NY married to Elizabeth Ware of Brownville NY. Were there other children?? 3. John Worden b 1807/08 married Esther Whiting (b 1811 Maine), probably Chautauqua County, NY. (Esther Whiting's family had recently moved from Maine to Allegany County, NY, so John and Esther could have married in either Allegany County or Chautauqua County.) The 1830 Federal Census finds John and Esther residing in Hanover, Chautauqua County, NY; 1840 Federal Census finds them in Poland, Chautauqua County, NY; 1850 census in Yorkshire, Cattaraugus County, NY. The family seems to break up sometime between 1850 and 1855, as the older children are residing with relatives in the 1855 census, with no sign of John Worden, Esther (Whiting) Worden and the two youngest Worden children, Esther Ann and Elbert/Ehlert. John Worden and Esther (Whiting) Worden Children: Lois Elvira - b 1830 Hanover, Chautauqua County, NY - married Miles Colton Lydia Jane - b 1832 Hanover, Chautauqua County, NY - married 1) Asa Eastland; 2) Charles Babcock Hannah Minerva - b 1834 Hanover, Chautauqua County, NY - married Isaac H. Beach Alsophina - born 1839 Hanover, Chautauqua County, NY - married John H. Peck (my line) - Peck family resided in Machias until shortly after the Civil War - removed to Wayland, Allegan County, Michigan until 1872 when Alsophina divorced John and moved to Iowa with their daughter Ida May Peck, leaving her ex-husband John and their son Harvey in Wayland. Benjamin - b 1840 Poland, Chautauqua County, NY - married 1) Prudence Catherine Martin; 2) Kate Ann (Jennie) Hawkins I have recently found Esther (Whiting) Worden's marriage to one Richard B. Nuzum on April 1, 1855 in Marion County, Virginia (now West Virginia). Apparently Esther had married ___ Clarke sometime after the 1850 Federal Census and before April 1, 1855, as Esther was called "Widow Clarke" at the time of her marriage. I do know that this is my Esther Whiting Worden, as probate records have been found in Yorkshire to prove this is the correct Esther. The 1860 census finds Esther residing with her third husband, Richard B. Nuzum, some children from his first marriage (that wife deceased) and the two younger Worden children, Esther Ann and Ehlert, now using the name Clarke. I have also recently found the death of one John C. Worden (1872) in Orangeville, Barry County, Michigan. The death certificate indicates this John C. Worden was born 1808 in Chautauqua County, NY. His parents' names were unknown. The 1860 and 1870 census give his wife's name as Harriet, twelve years his junior, also born NY. Land records indicate that John Worden purchased this land from the US Government in 1856. I believe this John Worden to be my ancestor, John Worden, first husband of Esther Whiting. His daughter (my ancestor) Alsophina Worden Peck would have been residing in next door Allegan County, Michigan in 1872, at the time of his death in Barry County. I believe after her father's death, Alsophina's marriage which was probably already weak, could take no more, at which time she divorced her husband and came to Iowa with her daughter. I seek help with the following questions: 1) Proof that the John Worden who died 1872 in Orangeville, Barry County, Michigan is indeed the John Worden who first appears 1830 Hanover; 1840 Poland; 1850 Yorkshire. 2) Names of John Worden's parents 3) Name and marriage information and death information for Esther (Whiting) Worden's second husband, whose surname was Clarke or Clark. I am guessing she probably met and married him around Yorkshire, Cattaraugus County, NY and he probably died in or around Marion County, Virginia (now West Virginia) ca 1854. 4) Descendants of the two youngest children: Esther Ann Worden born abt 1843 New York, going by the surname Clark(e). I believe she might have married one Benjamin Mason in Marion County, West Virginia 20 Dec 1863, although old family records passed down in my family indicate she married a ___ Nugent. 5) Descendants of Elbert/Ehlert (Worden) Clark(e) born abt 1845 New York. I believe he married 1) Elizabeth Jane Hovater and had at least the following Clark children: Andrew born abt 1861 Marion County, Virginia (WV) and Elizabeth Clark born abt 1864 Marion County, Virginia (WV); married 2) Sarah Stevens and had Louise E. Clark born abt 1880. 6) I also seek the death date and place of my Esther (Whiting) Worden Nuzum. Richard B. Nuzum died 1887. At that time, I believe Esther was still alive. I do not know if she died in what was then known as West Virginia, or if she perhaps moved north again to New York (perhaps Cattaraugus County) to be with some of her other children, or perhaps moved elsewhere to be with children I have not yet placed. Any and all assistance greatly appreciated. Brenda Hare Cedar Rapids, Iowa

    3. Would anyone one the Allegany List give me an idea on how to research the names of 3 Carpenter sisters? My husbands great grandfather had three sisters whose given and married names I cannot find. Have any list members found ways to trace first names of children that appear (without name) on the early census? Or do any listers have a family member with "Carpenter" as a maiden name? I have found detailed accounts of all the male children in the family and the one daughter who died young, and is buried in Till The Day Dawns Cemetery.. This family came to Angelica, Allegany Co. from Elmira, NY in 1814. They lived in the village of Angelica until 1819, then bought another farm in 1819 in what is now West Almond, close to Birdsall. Two of the daughters were b (according to the 1800 and 1819 census,) between 1795 & 1799. One daughter between 1810 & 1814. There were four brothers and four sisters in the family. I would imagine the daughters most likely married in Allegany Co. as two of them were no longer listed in the family in 1820, the third daughter was no longer listed in the 1830 census. This is the family: Father: Richard Carpenter b. 1771 or 72 Mother: Mehitable b. ? (between 1774-1778) 1st Dau. b. 1795-1799 2nd. 3. For those reluctant to contact a paid researcher: I would contact the local name supplied and ask upfront the charge per hour. I have occasionally hired selected research at far distant places and felt a small charge was well worth it. If you cannot afford the person whose name you were given, they may be able to suggest someone else who would do some looking for a lesser charge. I have received letters similar to yours from other county historians and historical societies in the past. I have been to Belmont to the historians office and Court house (across the street from each other) only once since Belmont is a several hour drive for me. The people in both places were pleasant, but there was not an abundance of staff and quite honestly they were busy steering people to the places where they could look for themselves. I remember in the court house having to climb ladders to get to the wills. The NYS census books and land records did not require climbing anything, however. The historians office had some interesting old local history books, if I remember correctly, family correspondence files in file cabinets. I do not remember if they had obituaries. Both offices were cramped for space. I found the most useful information in the Court House. With cutbacks in NYS and the various county employees I would not expect the situation to change soon. In the County I live in, County and State Employees are not being replaced and some layoffs are in the offing. That likely means nonessential services will be cut in many areas. That being said, I have no first hand knowledge about Allegany Co.
