Hello Is there anyone who can help me find out about the Crittendens in your Allegany Co records between 1806 and 1879? I am looking mostly for records on Mary, and Orrin, and Louis. My grandfather had a grandfather named Orrin, and my granfather's father was named Franklin, born in New York in 1854, and I am trying to find out if this is the right Orrin and Mary. ANY help will be appreciated. Thank you very much, Marian -- Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Crowley, Raycraft (?) Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BUB.2ACI/5861 Message Board Post: Mary E. Crowley Mary E. CROWLEY passed away at her home near Fillmore, September 3rd, 1932, at the age of 71 years and following an illness of several months duration. The funeral, which was largely attended, was held Tuesday afternoon in the Fillmore M.E. Church, the Rev. C. H. NASH, pastor, officiating and she was laid to rest in Pine Grove cemetery beside her mother who died several years ago. Services at the grave were in charge of Aurora Chapter, O. E. S. of which lodge she was a charter member. In the death of Miss CROWLEY, not only this immediate community, but in an unbounded area, has lost its most noted educator and leader in civic and cultural affairs, and one whose influence as a teacher over a period of 43 years, will extend to future generations. Mary E. CROWLEY, the daughter of Charles and Catherine RAYCRAFT (?) CROWLEY, was born in Ireland and after the death of her father, came with her mother and brother to this country in 1862 and settled near Fillmore. The brother and sister attended the common schools and both went to the Geneseo Normal School. Her brother, Dennis D., who died about two years ago, was for many years a prominent physician in Oakland, California. After her graduation from Geneseo Normal School, Miss CROWLEY began teaching in the Dutch Hill district in 1879. Several terms were then taught in the Minard district and at Short Tract. Fourteen summers were spent in taking summer courses at Chautauqua. Miss CROWLEY later taught at Lattice Bridge school and then at Hume, where she remained for five years. In the year of 1908, she accepted the position of preceptress(sp) of Fillmore High School. Retaining this position until 1917, she then became principal of the school and remained in that capacity until 1921. At that time, solicitude for her mother, whose health was failing, caused her to tender her resignation. Although she had so shaped her whole work that she could be at home as much as possible, driving a horse even after the advent of the automobile, to and from school, she felt that her teaching took her from home too much during the declining years of her mother's life. Fillmore High School, as did her other schools, made an excellent record under her leadership. After her mother's death, Miss CROWLEY lived alone at her pleasant home which she chose to call Riverlawn. In 1929, the first Crowley reunion of her former students was held in Fillmore, and the reunion was in one way a unique one, inasmuch as that as pupils of the same teacher, two generations of many families were present. This condition existed because of the fact that Miss CROWLEY had always taught in the same supervisory district, conducting in all only six different schools At the time of her death, Miss CROWLEY was president of the Wide Awake Club of Fillmore, which organization she was instrumental in organizing in 1895 and of which she had been president since it was founded. Her interest in the work of the Fillmore public library extended from the time it was founded to the close of her active career because of failing health. A member of the Board of Education of Fillmore High School for several years, she was elected president of that body but a few weeks before her death. She was also president of the Teacher's Association of the First Supervisory District of Allegany County. In addition to her duties as a teacher, in nearly every district in which she taught she inculcated an active interest among her pupils and others, in literary and educational matters (last part missing). CLARK of Houghton, and a teacher in the Taylor Hill district, died in the Genesee Country Hospital, Fillmore, Thursday morning, following a fall from a horse which she was riding Monday afternoon. Miss CLARK, it is reported, was on her way to Rushford late Monday, on horseback, and near Brookside the animal stepped from the dirt road on to the slippery pavement. As it had been raining, the horse slipped and fell, throwing her from its back. Witnesses state her foot caught in the stirrup and she was dragged some distance before her horse was stopped. She was brought to the Fillmore Hospital where examination by physicians revealed a double fracture of the skull and she had remained in an unconscious condition since the accident. I am trying to trace my great-great-great grandparents, DENNIS CASEY (1801-1873) and HONORA (O'BRIEN) CASEY (1816-1871) to County Kerry (Listowel or Killarney), Ireland as well as locate other descendants in the following New York State and Pennsylvania counties: Allegany, Cattaraugus, and McKean. I would appreciate any information about the people listed below. About 1848 Dennis, Honora, and their six children--John T. (1835-1889), Timothy (1836-1864), Ellen (born 1841-1910), Mary, Edward, and Dennis G. (about 1847-1909)-- emigrated from Listowel or Killarney. They were Catholic, grocers, comfortably established financially. However, in about 1848, when great numbers starved because of the Great Potato Famine, they suffered heavy financial losses, having given freely to those who had no money to pay. Dennis and his family settled in Cuba, N.Y and he was one of the original members of Our Lady of Angels Church. A family document described him as a "crew boss." "He did the 'figuring' and always wore a high silk hat!" Details pertaining to Dennis and Honora children include: 1.) John T. married Margaret Foley and became a section foreman on the Erie Railroad. He was educated, a violinist, and an overseer of the poor for three consecutive years. John and Margaret had 4 children, Josephine Skinner, Nora E, Timothy, Mary J. and Rev. John. 2.) Timothy, worked on the Old Genesee Canal. He drowned at his work while still young. 3.) Ellen married Patrick O'Hern. Among their 6 children, Edward who won both the Cornell scholarship and the West Point appointment when he graduated from Olean High School and who rose to a colonel eventually. Father Louis O'Hern, who held high position in the Paulist order of priests. Father John Francis O'Hern, who was bishop of the Rochester Dioceses. Father Dennis O'Hern, who died at a rather young age. Monsignor Thomas O'Hern, was a very popular preacher. He gave weekly radio sermons from Buffalo, New York. Nora who married Judge Parker of Children's Court in Olean. 4.) Mary married Maurice O'Hern. They had 3 girls and 6 boys. The girls married well and the boys held prominent positions, a doctor, 2 priests, a railroad engineer, and an actor. 5.) Edward became a carpenter, left Olean, New York and settled in Red Oak Iowa. There, he became a well-to-do building contractor and raised a fine family. 6.) Dennis G. First married Maria Brown (Protestant). See below. I have determined that my lineage stems from Dennis G. and Maria (BROWN) CASEY. They married when they were very young, lived on the Haskell Road, Olean, New York, and had four children, Carrie Marion (Mamie), John A. (born 1872) , and Francis C. (1875-1939). Maria died young and these children were raised (Protestant) by the Brown family. 1.) Carrie, married Aaron Keller and they lived in Cuba, New York. Carrie had no children and died very young. 2.) Marion married Dan Van Cise and lived n Castile, New York. She had one son, Earl Van Cise. She passed away when she was about 35 years old. 3.) John A. married Pearl Leona Foster had four daughters, Genevieve, Thelma, Irene, and Veryl. 4.) Francis C. married Glenna Maude Baker. They had four children which are discussed below. Dennis remarried in July of 1884. His second wife was Bridget Fitzgibbons (Catholic). Together they had three girls, Helen Elizabeth (1886-1960), Anna Josephine (1887-1925), and Mary Agnes. They were raised Catholic and never married. In 1909 Dennis, a carpenter, fell from a scaffold in Olean, New York, broke his neck, and subsequently died. Francis CASEY, from Dennis' first marriage, is my great-grandfather. Francis, a tile maker, and Maude had four children, my grandfather, Ralph Dennis (husband of Anna), Ned Ernest, Leona May and John Andrew. All of these became teachers but John, who died during childhood. Moreover, Ralph, Ned, and Leona all married but Ralph is the only one that had children. Sincerely, Dr. Kimberly Casey-Del Priore
