I am not sure which NY list I saw the posting a few days ago regarding someone finding the website of Bibles Lost and Bibles Found, but there are only two (of us) webmasters that maintain the entire website. I am in charge of getting the "Bibles Found" and "Bibles Lost" posted for the world to see. Since someone posted the url on one of the NYlists, there has been in excess of 50 new requests to be posted, mostly for Bibles Lost. I will get these posted as soon as humanly possible, but please be a bit forgiving if you don't see your posting immediately. I am just starting a two week vacation, so will get them posted hopefully in the next couple of days. Brenda

Surnames: Minard, Smith Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BUB.2ACI/5936 Message Board Post: W.S. Minard 1935 William S. MINARD was born Oct. 16, 1870 on the farm where he lived at the time of his death. His father was Geo. E. MINARD and his mother, Arabella SMITH. Both families were pioneers in this country. The MINARDS in the town of Hume, and the SMITHS in the town of Granger. Will's grandfather MINARD, coming from Vermont, settled in this town in 1831, less than three years after the Indian title to the land on which he settled, had been extinguished by treaty. He was all his life one of the principal men in the town, was supervisor for three terms and a leader in all civic affairs. The SMITHS came to Granger several years earlier from Otsego county, N.Y., and were equally distinguished in the development of that territory. They have always been a large family and have been always honorable and respected people. Will went from the district school to Pike Seminary which he attended for three years. He finished all the work for graduation in three years but did not graduate because he had no desire to do so, a characteristic action for him. Since that time, he has lived quietly at home, spending his leisure in reading and reflection. He was a great reader of books and I can confidently say that he never read an unworthy book. He had a large and fine library which he himself accumulated. There was very little fiction in it, but much of history, science and sociology. He had a remarkable memory and an accurate and clear thinking mind. Thus he became a man of great knowledge and of definite, well founded and high ideals on the many subjects which interested him. His life indeed was essentially the life of the mind rather than that of the body. Had he possessed ambition of the ordinary objects of man's ambitions, he might have achieved much. But his ideals were not those of ordinary ambition. I am sure that while he was entirely conscious of his own unusual powers, he lived as he did simply because that was the way in which he wanted to live. He was a peaceful man, had no enemies and was not critical of the faults of others. His life seems strangely devoid of incident to most people, but I am sure that with his temperament it was a most happy and satisfying life. Those who knew him best will always revere his character. obit written by Dr. A.H. LYMAN [Northern Allegany Observer obituary, transcribed by Louise Y. Thank you. > > Charles Woolever > Here is an obituary of my ancestor S. Richard Lown. This transcript was provided to me via someone else's Family Tree Maker file as is other than my clearing up spacing problems--it doesn't have a source or date but the body of the obituary makes it obvious that it was printed in "The Patriot," presumably within a reasonable timespan after his death. This doesn't specifically refer to the business you describe, but it does trace the sequence of some of his business actitivies (if it is indeed the same S.R. Lown, but I haven't found that much Lown information at all, let alone in Allegany County, so I'd think it likely that they are the same guy). I would love to have any Lown information you have discovered and will be happy to share more. Obituary: S. RICHARD LOWN S. Richard Lown, for many years one of Cuba's most prominent businessmen and a worthy citizen, died at Randolph, Aug. 29, as previously noted in The Patriot. The deceased was born April 17, 1847 at Hinsdale. On Oct. 10, 1872 , he was married to Alice M. Ault, who died Feb. 15, 1916. There was a son of the marriage, Fred R. Lown of Gowanda, who survives. In early life Mr. Lown was a school teacher, later conducting a saw and feed mill at North Cuba. After this he bought the mill of the Ackerly & Still Lumber Co., and moved to Cuba, where he conducted a prosperous business for many years. Some years ago he moved to Norfolk, Va., where he bought a large tract of lumber. later he returned to Cuba and after the death of hes wife removed to Montana, making his home on a ranch. Not long since he returned to the East and bought a small farm in Randolph, where he resided till his death. In 1920 Mr. Lown married Mrs. Kate Bruchart of Reading, Pa., who survives. The funeral service was held at the home in Randolph, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Clark of Gowanda, with burial in Cuba. --Cindy Palmer (cinpalmer@aol.com)

They lived in Grove, Alleghany, Ny until after the 1870 census. Can anyone find them in a 1880 census for there? Does anyone know if William was a minister, priest? I have found a couple of William Patterson's in the LDS one for Wisconsin and one for Nebraska. The Wisconsin one sounds more like it but I am wondering. Also can anyone find reference to a son Frank S. or S. Frank attached to William and Mary? Also, does anyone know anything about the mother of Mary Ann who was Parmelia Latham who lived with them either in the 1860 or 1870 census for Grove? I know that William and Mary had the following children: Obed, George, Edward (edwin), Sophia and Theodosia, but not a Frank so far. I have Obed married to a Henrietta, but the only Henrietta that I can find with a daughter Ellen, is married to a Frank, with the maiden name of Schuknecht. Our Henrietta was supposedly born in Hume and her maiden name was e! ither Koontz or Wright. Can anyone help? My brick wall is crushing me! Vicki
