    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BUB.2ACI/5973 Message Board Post: ELMER GEORGE VANDUSEN Elmer George VanDUSEN, 64, died at his home in Hume village Sunday, November 1. Funeral services were held from his late home Wednesday at two o'clock, Rev. Gomer MILLS officiating and burial was made in the East Koy Cemetery under the auspices of Oriona Lodge, No. 229, F. and A. M. MR. VanDUSEN is survived by his wife, Mary, a son, George, and a grandson, Elmer, Jr., besides several nieces and cousins. Elmer VanDUSEN had resided in the village of Hume 36 years and was highway superintendent of his town for a number of years. The passing of Elmer recalls to all of us the sad experience which he went through and the fortitude he displayed in refusing to give up. About two years ago he suffered the loss of a limb and previous to this he had one amputated. However, he showed that if one will make an effort he cannot be held back, as he, with the aid of artificial limbs again took up his labors with a smile. Many thought he would be unable to get about but for the past two years, under serious handicap, he had driven his car and went along as though nothing had happened. Elmer truly exemplified to all of us a great spirit of courage and appreciation. [Northern Allegany Observer obituary, transcribed by Louise Y. Mills, 2003, from Cora Lahr's scrapbooks, Fillmore, NY]

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BUB.2ACI/5968 Message Board Post: Mrs. Emma Thomas 1936 Mrs. Emma THOMAS was born in the town of Holland, N.Y. January 5, 1868, a daughter of Norman W. and Almira WAGNER HOPPER. On May third, 1885, she was a united in marriage to Lewis F. THOMAS. To this union were born seven children. For many years Mr. and Mrs. THOMAS resided in Hume. Besides performing the multitude of tasks that naturally fall to the mother of a large family, Mrs. THOMAS gave a largely of her time in helping the families who needed her as a domestic nurse. 25 years ago our nearest hospitals were at Warsaw or Olean. Trained nurses were not easily procured. So far as the writer knows, Mrs. THOMAS always responded when asked for help. She was a friendly neighbor, an untiring worker, and a good wife and mother. During the past year she has been in poor health. Her strong body gradually wasted away until only a shadow of her former self remained. About five weeks ago she became seriously ill and passed away on Thursday, January 9 at her home in Centerville. She is survived by her husband; three sons: Ralph of Hume, Lawrence and Gordon Centerville; two daughters: Mrs. Helen MATHEWSON, Ridgeway, Pa., Mrs. Alyse EGGERT, Kenmore; a sister: Mrs. Joseph KUHN, Batavia, and a half sister, Mae HOPPER, Conneant, Ohio, a half brother, Forest HOPPER, Buffalo, and a step mother, Mrs. Eva HOPPER, Conneant, Ohio. Two other sons, Dee who died in France in 1918, and Ben, who died 1932 have preceded her in death. The funeral was conducted by Rev. F.H. WRIGHT, of Houghton. The large group of friends who gathered in the family home testified to the circle of acquaintances and friends in which the deceased moved. Death has claimed another from our midst. Loved by her children, husband and friends, tenderly cared for and respected, she has gone on into eternity. May God help us all to find comfort and help in Him. 1. [NYAllega] Naturalization Information
    2. I thought this would be useful information to pass on Copied from another mailing list.  -------------- I got my copy of his naturalization from the INS. Visit their website to find the address of the appropriate office.  With the INS, you have to send your FOIA request to *your* nearest INS office, not the office nearest the incident. (I originally wrote to an office in PA, only to have them send it back and tell me to mail it to a local office.) When you write to the INS, be sure to give as much information as possible, but most importantly the time you believe him to have  receivedhis naturalization, and where he lived at the time. And be patient...since 9/11, the INS seems to be moving much more slowly on FOIA requests. I had originally written for my grandfather's papers in April 2001. In Oct 2001 I received "most" of the papers, but due to a clerical error (which they claim wasn't their fault) I received someone else's Declaration of Intention. I had to start all over again because my request was closed. So, in November 2001 (post 9/11, and during the anthrax mailings) I wrote again with even greater detail. On March 31, 2003--over a year later--I got my papers. This didn't cost me a thing, just time.

Viola was dtr. of David A. Eymer and Jennie (Jane) Neil. David's father was Daniel(1817-1890), Daniel's father was David(1784-ca1862). If you do descend from William Davis and Fidelia Ann Howell it is interesting to note that David(1784) married a 2nd time after the death of his first wife, Naomi Oviatt. This 2nd wife, who outlived him, was named Alzina. All indications are that she was the widow Alzina Robertson Howell. This Alzina was the mother of Fidelia Ann making Fidelia the dtr - in - law and the stepdaughter of David. I try to keep my gedcom up to date with my research.
