Whitney in 1840 in the town of Wirt. There were three people in the household 1 male of 40-50, 1 female 30-40 & 1 female 10-15. In 1850 the record is: Reuben Whitney, age 52, b. Conn., a farmer, Elizabeth, age 44, b. NY & Lydia, age 20, b. NY. They are on pg. 139 in the town of Wirt, Allegany Co. There was no other Reuben or R. Whitney in the county. You can check the USgenweb Allegany Co., site for info. on the courthouse & perhaps mention of the Whitneys. NY state did not require birth/death certificates until after 1880, so you probably won`t find any public records on the family except for land dealings & possibly a will. I see that there is data in the 1880 Census of a Robert Sherwood, b. 1875-76. He is the son of Roswell and Ellen Sherwood and has a sister, Fanny, b. 1880. Roswell [b. 1851] is the son of Ephraim [b. 1822]and Theresa Malvina Kellogg Sherwood -- all are in Bolivar, NY. My Robert Sherwood joined the Navy in 1899 and married Elizabeth Howard in 1904. His family is a mystery and we were told he was an orphan. I do see a Fanny and Ellen Sherwood together in Binghamton, NY in 1888/89. Perhaps Roswell died? I'm looking for information that would confirm or deny this Robert Sherwood of Bolivar, NY as my relative. Perhaps someone would have death information on Roswell and information about their children, as well as the spouse and children of Robert Sherwood.
