    3. I am still looking for more information about the Titus and Hannah (Peters) McKinster family. Does anyone have any McKinster background? Siblings: Henry, Joseph, Barbary, Sarah Elizabeth (married a Wordell and then Charles Smith), Peter(?), Charles( his daughter, Jenny, married a Voorhees who was a dr. or pharmacist and another daughter married a Sutter), and Caroline. Found in 1850 census in Genesee Township, Allegany Co. Also looking for more information on Moshers. Ben married Lena Belle McKinster. His parents were James and Kate (Woodkirk) Mosher. Ben and Lena Belle were related to each other through her aunt(Nancy Jones Mosher and Wilson Mosher), but I am not certain of the details. Anyone with any information about the names above, please write. ----- Original Message ----- From: <bobkat40@eznet.net> To: <NYALLEGA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 28, 2003 8:35 PM Subject: [NYAllega] Re: Photos of Allegany, Cattaraugus and McKean County Families > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BUB.2ACI/6296.8 > > Message Board Post: > > I descend from the following surnames in Allegany, Cattaraugus and McKean Counties: Rice, Hoyt (Haight), Hitchcock, Merrick, Tenney, Webster, Barber, Cole, Mosher (Mosier), Deake (Dake), Gould, Davis, Cleghorn, Stahley, Evans, Unger, Kingsley, Evans, Armstrong and Rose. 1. [NYAllega] Scrapbook Willard Wellman First boy to die from Friendship NY 24 Oct 1918
    2. Died in Naval Service. Radio chief Willard Wellman of the US Navy laid at rest last Sunday A gloom fell over the hearts of Friendship people last Thursday when a wire was flashed that Willard Wellman had died in a hosp. in NY. Smiles were changed to a shadow in a twinkling and sadness which was almost sickness entered the hearts of all who had known him. But four weeks prior to his writing Willard had been home on his first leave since his enlistment. He had again met and talked with his many friends and had again impressed them all with his burning interest in his work and intense patriotic desire to do his best in his line for his country. First to enlist from our town he is first chosen to pay the supreme sacrifice and the debt we the community and we as a nation owe his flower of our youth will never be forgotten and his memory will be cherished as one who went and died that we might live and have our being in a world of peace and safety. At the first call of his country for volunteers the patriotism of this spendid young man could not be leashed. His beautiful devotion to his mother which as so marked and admired by all, his love of education which he gained in our school his plesant relations with a host of friends and relatives in this place all these as dear to him as they were were only surmounted by his love of country and in April 1917 he hastened to New York to enlist. He had been a wireless enthusiast and had erected a receiving station at his home on Depot St. He knew the code and was very conversant with the theories and practices of this line of work. He first applied to the Marconi Co in NY and was taken on at once for service. His first experience was one of great privation and sacrifice. He was put aboard a coast patrol in charge of the wireless and for months went up and down the Atlantic coast on a commandered tug manned by a Captain and mate who were given to excessive liquor and at times abusive. The food was hardly fit to eat and his quarters uncomfortable nevertheless he stuck to the ship and performed his duty for the whole two months without leave. Upon landing at Providence he left and went back to NY and entered Columbia University for training. He was there about six weeks and during a good share of this time was an instructor in wireless telegraphy. Next he was given a Listening-In Station in Manhatten, a very exciting and important postion as German submarines were then infesting the Atlantic and our coast. After completing his training at this place he was placed in Bush Terminal in Brooklyn where he remained having full charge of this station until his leave as in the Navy it is called leave instead of furlough the first week of October. He remained here for 10 days Upon return he was transferred to Whitehall Station,NY where he contracted his final sickness on the 17th of Oct. He was taken to Willard Parker Hosp. in Manhatten suffering from a acute attack of influenza which rapidly developed Toxic Pneumonia causing death on Thursday last Oct 24th. The remains were brought here from the home of Mrs Wellmans sister Mrs W O Kingsbury Rev C W Posey of Hamburg officiating. Draped in the Flag and bearing his service cap which he wore the body was escorted to its final resting place in the family plot in Maple Grove Cem by the local NY Guard and a long line of loving friends and relatives. Only immediate relatives were allowed in the house owing to the prohibition of public gathering. Willard held the title of Radio chief and was commander of the men of his station. He was listed for overseas service a distincitive honor mark of which he was duly proud. He was cited by his officers as one of the most faithful competent and industrious workers in his line and it was conceded that in his fervor he had virtually worked himself to death. His loss is not only one that brings sadness and grief to the home folks but one that will be felt by the Navy of which he served until he died.He was born in North Tonawanda,NY 4 Feb 1898 the only son of Mr Harold Robinson Wellman and Mrs Victoria Wellman. His father died suddenly in Chicago in 1906. After this great blow to mother and son they went to Ann Arbor where Mrs Wellman thought to give Willard the best advantages of an education. They remained there until 2 years ago when they moved to this place the old home of both Mr and Mrs Wellman. Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mrs AA Pearse of Pittsfield,Mass., grandmother of the deceased,Miss Cora Wellman of Pittsfield Mass, his Aunt, Mr and Mrs George Robinson, Mrs S M Norton, Mr and Mrs G Norton of Buffalo Mr W N Renwick, Mrs Helen Hills and Margaret King of Cuba NY Elaine s88897@aol.com

    1. [NYAllega] Part 2 of Franklin King letter WW1 Friendship NY Sep 1918
    2. Well hows everything around the old town going? I suppose the same as ever I would sure like to be there tonight. I suppose that when you reaches you that you will be going to school again tell all the boys that I think of them and would like to hear from them once in awhile for a letter is as good as gold over here and it goes along way to help chher a fellow up. Give my best regards to your folks and also to Blossoms and to everyone along the old Avenue. And tell them that Ningie is making good on the battlefields of France. Well taps have sounded and I guess will get to bed hoping that this reaches you I remain Your old friend Franklin G King 1918 Sept 17 My dear people We are having it a little easy now for a day or two now have just had some of the hardest nights I ever had in my life. One night we marched all night thru mud from six inches to a foot or two deep with all our belongings on our backs. But we are getting as hard as iron and are never any the worse for sleeping in grounds with low temp after hiking all night this one in particular it rained hard all night and a high wind was blowing. It was extremley uncomfortable and fatiguing but ended up with that. I do dread winter here tho but the way things look we may not spend it here. We expect to spend part of it at least in the Good old USA. Places where the Germans have spent years making a sector impregnable the Allies especially the Americans have wrecked in that many hours. I have seen places where rows of machine guns emplacements were smashed beyond recognition and the ground plowed up to a depth of several feet for acres and acres and all done in a few hours Our artillery seems to be very accurate. In such places the Germans have very artistic bungalows for officers under the edge of a hill equipped with electric lights and sometimes running water. All the dugouts and stables are electriclly lighted. They have regular high tension transmission systems for the current. I suppose the Allies have the same arrangements where the line stood a long time but the Americans arent waiting to do things like that they are making East too fast. Im enclosing a plate I took off a German battery case. They use it to prevent mistakes in letter and sound alike. We have one also so you see this one was rather interesting to me. I also have some captured apparatus Im going to use. I havent seen a newspaper in a long time so Im not up to the dope but rumor has it the English and French Letter is cut off here Elaine s88897@aol.com

    1. [NYAllega] partial letter WW1 scrapbook From Franklin G King WW1 Spldier Part 1 Friendship
    2. The article on other side had this article on back so first part of letter missing but its still interesting dated 24 Oct 1918 Friendship,NY I enlisted in the Signal Corps last Sept and after several months taining at Camp Dix,N.J., left for overseas had a fine trip across the ocean one never to be forgotten. I never thought there was so much water. There were a great many interesting events that took place which I would like to tell you about but I am afraid that they would not get past the censor so so much for my trip across. After getting rested up from my trip and getting to camp we felt fine. Since Ive been here I have seen quite alot of the country, and believe me it is a great sight so many interesting places and things that a fellow has read about but never expected to see. The French people are very kind to us and we get along very well. I have learned to talk quite alot of French and wished that we had learned it at school for it would come in very handy now. We are busy all the time getting ready to clean up the hun and by the way our boys have advanced in the last month it looks as if we would be back in the Good Old USA before long Lets hope so anyway Heres my address Pvt. Franklin G King, 303 Field Signal Battalion American Expeditionary Forces Via New York.

The reference in Menard to his rafting refers to some 2 dozen trips he made floating down the Allegany River from Cuba/Olean to Pittsburgh and then walking home. This was probably a way of marketing lumber, but the same trip was made by emigrants from Eastern NY to the West who rafted from Olean Point down the Allegany and Ohio on rafts sold to them by Allegany County builders. Two "postcard" photos, circa 1908, of Alonzo are attached.
