These names were of those that died while in Quarantine in the Staten Island Marine Hospital. This is just one year of deaths 1849-50. We ask if you would be kind enough to pass this list along to your various groups. We seek descendants of these people. Descendants would strongly help our cause of providing a proper reinterment of the exhumed remains to a legal cemetery. Thank you for any consideration that may be given to this urgent request. Responses should be sent to: [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> or Friends of Abandoned Cemeteries, Inc., 115 Lathrop Avenue, Staten Island, New York 10314. 1. [NYALLEGA] Dallas Benjamin Whipple Bio
    2. Bill Hart
    3. from Allegany County and its people : a centennial memorial history of Allegany County, New York 1896, page 891 (in the biography section for Cuba) Dallas Benjamin Whipple, D.D.S., son of Benjamin and Pamelia (Marsh) Whipple, was born in New Hudson Oct. 11, 1844, where Benjamin Whipple settled in 1830 and died Aug. 3, 1889. His children were Harriet (Mrs. Hiram Gleason of Belfast), Dr. Prescott of Chicago, Mary L. (died in Flint, Mich., in 1847, leaving 2 sons), Dr. Otis of Olean, Dallas B., Royal (a farmer on the New Hudson homestead) and Dr. Gardner of Cuba. D.B. Whipple practiced dentistry in Cuba and Olean, and in 1877 became an oil operator on Kendall Creek, Pa., and founded Dallas City. In 1881 he operated in Richburg and later Clarksville. In 1882 he purchased a farm in the village which he stocked with that famous herd of Holstein-Friesian cattle, known as "The family of Pieterje 2d," 9see another page). Mr Whipple then began breeding American trotting horses and was the firs man in the county to own a Hambletonian stallion. In 1891 he sold the stallion "Egthorne." whose record was 2.12 1/2, and now owns some of his progeny. (This is the fastest stallion record in the state.) Mr. Whipple possesses the true instincts of a breeder. He has filled all the "chairs" in his Odd Fellows lodge and is a Freemason. He has been village trustee, president of the Valley Point Agricultural and Mechanical Society for two years, vice president of the Western New York Agricultural Society and vice president of the Elmira Exposition. He was the organizer of the "D.B. Whipple Protectives" fire company of Cuba. Mr. Whipple married Oct. 24, 1865, Eliza J., daughter of Abraham L. and Olive (Randolph) Flinn. Children, George D., born March 10, 1868, and Maud E., born Sept. 30, 1874. Through her mother, Mrs. Whipple is a lineal descendant of John Randolph of Virginia. ==================== I reformatted it from the single paragraph it was in the original. I'm not inclined to believe Mary's 1847 death date, as she was born in 1835. Bill

    1. [NYALLEGA] Cemetery Location/Name - Request for Help
    2. Barbara Shannon
    3. Hi Listers, I wonder if someone on the list could help me identify an old cemetery. I find it on the Beers Atlas of West Almond in 1869. It is located near Angelica Creek, west of the village of West Almond. E. Watson, G. Watson and A. Post own plots of land nearby. I believe this is the area where my HANKS ancestors once lived. Enoch Hanks, my 4x great-grandfather, owned a sawmill on Angelica Creek in the 1820's. Can anyone tell me the name of the cemetery, is it still there, has a reading of the cemetery been done and if so, is it available on-line or otherwise? Thanks for any help you can provide. Barbara Shannon

    3. I have recently finished transcribing "tidbits from 24 issues of the Alfred "Sun" for years 1884 & 1885. While most of the news in these tidbits are about individuals from Alfred, Andover & Independence, there are also some from Scio, Little Genesee, Friendship, Wellsville, Belmont, Cuba, West Almond and other towns in Allegany County. I have put the transcriptions online at http://allegany.webdesignsbyshirley.com/ . There is no charge for viewing the transcriptions. I will also be including, at the end of this message, a listing of the dates of the newspapers transcribed and the surnames that appeared. Please be aware that only one or pages were transcribed from each issue. Also, a surname often appears more then onece on a page. It is suggested that you use the search function on your browser to locate all times that surname appears on a page. It is my hope that this will be of help to those researching their genealogy roots in Allegany county. 1. [NYALLEGA] MURRAY/WILLIAMS Families
    2. Hello, I am looking for further info on my great-grandfather, Frank Williams, who married Mattie Murray. Mattie was a daughter of Martin and Nancy Murray, and a granddaughter of Henry and Rachel Murray. In the 1900 Census for Scio, Allegany County, Frank Williams is listed as the "adopted son" of Benjamin and Ruth Williams--and there is my brick wall. Benjamin Williams was born in Ohio, but Frank was born in NY. Does anyone know how I could find out where or from whom Frank may have been adopted? Frank is also listed as a widower at age 28; I believe his first wife's name was Ella and she died in 1899. I also understand that Frank and Mattie may have spent time in Ohio, possibly running a restaurant in Youngstown (?). Sorry to go on so long, but any tips on the Ohio connection, Frank's adoption, or the Murray line going back from Henry would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks! ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour

    2. Lois J Lane
    3. Yes, I do have a connection to the Marble family. My husband's grandfather was the son of a Marble. In fact, his name was Holsea Marble Lane. We live on the farm that he owned with his wife Blanche Ella Caldwell. She got the farm from her parents as she was the only child that lived to adulthood. I did not know Eliza's husband's first name was David. I also have some information on a George Burt and Susan Brown Burt. Are these also related to you? Samuel Marble had a brother Peter Marble that are our ancestors. Where do you live? I am just a hop, skip and jump from Freedom NY where some of the families lived. Let me know what you are looking for. Lois Lane BTW, the e-mail I had sent on the old cookbook was supposed to have been deleted because it was supposed to go to the writer of the e-mail, not the list. There was too much personal information on the e-mail to keep it there. I did notice your e-mails to the list about the Burt surname but didn't think anything about looking it up because it was not a real common name for my line. The Funeral of George N. Stowell Held Friday Afternoon. The funeral of the late George N. Stowell was held at his home in Black Creek, Allegany county, Friday afternoon. It was very largely attended. Among those present were about thirty from Olean, mostly young people--the intimate friends of the deceased. Rev. E. P. Hubbell, of Wellsville, preached the funeral sermon and paid an eloquent tribute to the noble life and character of the young man. The floral tributes were profuse and beautiful. They included a magnificent column composed of roses and carnations from the First National bank of this city, of which Mr. Stowell was an employe; a scroll of roses, comprising the motto and emblem of the order, from Olean Council, Royal Arcanum, of which the deceased was a member: a large emblematic Maltese cross of roses, from the Epworth League of the First M.E. church of this city, of which the deceased was a member: a placque of roses, from the young people of Olean, and a large number of smaller pieces and cut flowers from in! dividual friends. The casket was lined and covered with roses and smilax, and the grave was lined with evergreens. The services throughout, though unostentatious, were beautiful and impressive. Author: VKBush Surnames: Stowell Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.allegany/9820/mb.ashx Message Board Post: A YOUNG MAN'S SUICIDE. GEORGE N. STOWELL FOUND HANGING IN HIS FATHER'S BARN. Nervous Prostration and Insomnia Caused Him to Take a Vacation From His Duties in the Bank -- He Went Home to Black Creek -- Temporary Insanity Undoubtedly is the Cause of the Rash Act. Many Olean people were shocked and pained Tuesday evening by the news that George N. Stowell, a young man well known and universally esteemed in this city, had committed suicide by hanging at his home in Allegany county. Mr. Stowell was about 23 years of age, and was the eldest son of a family of ten children. He came to Olean about two years ago to accept the position of collection clerk in the First National bank. During his residence in this city he made many friends and was a popular young man generally. He was a member of the First M.E. church and Epworth League, assistant secretary of Epworth League, assistant secretary of the Sunday school, and secretary of Olean council, Royal Arcanum. He was of a rather nervous temperament and for some time past had been suffering from nervous prostration and insomnia. About four weeks ago he decided to take a vacation and try to recuperate his health on the farm of his father, L. D. Stowell, at Black Creek, about three miles north of Cuba. About 5 o'clock Tuesday afternoon he went to his father's barn to hitch up a team to drive to Cuba. He did not return and a search resulted in finding his dead body hanging from a beam in the barn. There is little doubt that his ill health and being unable to sleep affected his mind and that he was laboring under a temporary fit of insanity when he committed the rash act which terminated his existence. He was nephew of C. S. Stowell, a prominent citizen of Olean, and his brother, Welcome Stowell, has been occupying his position in the First National band during his absence.
