Author: Joseph_Backes Surnames: Boyd, Backes Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.allegany/9828/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, I'm looking for info on a Walter Boyd who married Jessie (maiden name unknown.) They had the following children: Della born in 1904, John born in 1906, Richard born in 1907, Mark born in 1909. I'm particularly interested in his wife Jessie. I could be wrong, but I believe that Jessie goes on to marry Jacob Christopher Backes. I don't know if there was a separation, or divorce, or if Walter died. In 1923 Jacob's wife Helen (Wolfe) Backes died. So, sometime between 1923 and 1939 Jacob marries Jessie. Jacob died in 1939. So, I'm wondering what happened to Jessie? Any help is appreciated. Thanks. Joseph Backes Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [NYALLEGA] Cynthia HASKINS Johnson (ca. 1809 - aft. 1879) resided in Canaedea
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: paulenewell Surnames: Haskins, Johnson, Simons Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.allegany/9827/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am searching for information about my 3rd great-grandmother Cynthia HASKINS Johnson; born circa 1809 likely in Allegany Co., New York; married William Johnson circa 1830 likely in Allegany Co., New York. Cynthia died sometime after 1879 at a time and place unknown to me. She was enumerated in the 1880 census of Hornellsville, Steuben Co., New York. William Johnson was born 07 Mar 1805 in New York and died 16 Jan 1860 likely in Canaedea, Allegany Co., New York. He's buried there in Canaedea Cemetery. William's parentage is unknown to me. William and Cynthia HASKINS Johnson had at least seven children born in eastern Allegany Co., New York between 1830 and 1852. The names of their children are: Almira, Annaliza, Albert H., Miranda, Teresa S., William B., and Helen. It is believed that after William Johnson's death in 1860 wife Cynthia never remarried. Cynthia is enumerated in the 1860 and 1870 census records of Canaedea, as follows: 1860 census of Canaedea, Allegany Co., NY lists: Cynthia Johnson Head Age 50 NY Albert Johnson Son Age 22 NY Teressa Johnson Daughter Age 18 NY William Johnson Son Age 12 NY Helen Johnson Daughter Age 8 NY 1870 census of Canaedea, Allegany Co., NY lists: Cynthia Johnson 61 Keeping House William B. 22 Farm Laborer Nellie 18 I believe that the above Helen "Nellie" JOHNSON (b. ca. 1852) married to John S. Simons sometime between the 1870 and 1880 census. Nellie may have been the second wife of John Simons. The family of John and Nellie JOHNSON Simons is enumerated in the 1880 census of Steuben Co., New York, as follows: 1880 census of Hornellsville, Steuben Co., New York (page 318A) lists: John S. SIMONS Self M Male W 46 MA Locomotive Engineer MA MA Nellie SIMONS Wife M Female W 27 NY Keeping House CT NY Ida SIMONS Dau S Female W 16 NY At Home MA NY Mary SIMONS Dau S Female W 13 NY At Home MA NY Charles SIMONS Son S Male W 10 NY At Home MA NY Marion SIMONS Son S Male W 2 NY MA NY Cynthia JOHNSON MotherL W Female W 71 NY NY NY The 1880 census of Hornellsville is my last known record of Cynthia HASKINS Johnson. I have not found her in the online cemetery records of Steuben or Allegany counties. I have no subsequent records of the family of John and Nellie JOHNSON Simons; perhaps, Cynthia went with them when they removed from Hornellsville. I am trying to find the place of death and burial of Cynthia HASKINS Johnson (ca. 1809 - aft. 1879). Also, any information on the whereabouts of John and Nellie JOHNSON Haskins, after 1880, would be much appreciated. Paul E. Sorry if I caused confusion. I have a Wellsville City Directory for 1930 that listed Jacob Backes and Jessie in paranthesis. And I thought, who the hell is that? And then in the 1940 Wellsville City Directory she is listed as a widow. I only knew of Jacob being married to Helen Wolfe. Helen dies in 1923. And Jacob died in 1939. Jacob is not listed as living with Jessie in the 1930 federal census. I don't know why. I do know that he did move about, proably chasing jobs. There was a Charles Backes. Charles' wife is still alive. Also a son, Paul. Another son, Timothy has died. I don't understand the reference to Hornell. Oh! Never mind. Yes, I think. If that's him, what the hell is he doing there? His father, Jacob Henry Backes learned the iron forging and iron moulding trade in Pittston, PA, and worked at the Pittston Stove works. Jacob Christopher Backes learned that trade too and was a foreman at McEvee (sp?) brothers in Wellsville, NY. It's a mystery why they moved to Wellsville. And a mystery why he is renting a room in Hornell when he's got a wife and 4 kids back in Wellsville. I see where you got Phillip G. Backes. It looks like Backes, but I don't think it really is. Maybe Bakes, or Baker. Wow, this is all a lot of info. Thanks again. Joe Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Looks like only accessing the NY State census is going to solve this problem. Have always had Ovid/Obed and Ory/Ora as born about 1816-17 and think the 1900 census birthdate is incorrect for July 1821(a brother Ira was born in 1821). Will look for NY state censuses that can confirm more info--have one for Ovid/Obed-for 1855 and need to find Ory/Ora's for 1855 and 1865. Keep hoping someone will come up with the death date of Ovid--may have gone to another state with one of his children. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
