Albany Listers: On May 14th, 2008 I ordered the following (3) fiche record from the LDS Salt Lake City Library: "An Index of Albany County (N.Y.) Records Covering Materials Within The Dates 1630-1930". Several weeks later I was notified by the local (Sacramento CA) Family History Center that the above (3) Fiche were "Permanently Restricted" (& thus could not be sent from Salt Lake to a Family History Center). On most Rootsweb lists there are a number of research oriented & talented people who are very familiar and experienced with the records available to the list members for researching in the county or geographical area covered by that list. I've just joined your list (explained below, if you care to read that also) and would appreciate one (or many) of those experienced individuals giving me the basic outline of available Albany County Records, and the best ways/places to get in to the early (1750 and before) history of Albany Co and the multitude of counties which split off from original Albany County. I've already used "N.Y. State Deeds 1654-1901 Grantees Index (G-K) & Grantors Index (H-L) 1630-1894" and struck out immediately. It's a beautifully printed record (as most of you know) but didn't have the info I was hoping to find. This is what I'm looking for (skip this part if you're busy, etc. but it's kinda' intriguing, to me): On 20 Dec. 1745 William Hopkins, Archbald Hopkins, Robert Lawtridge (Lottridge) and his wife Elizabeth (Hopkins) Lawtridge, all of Albany County NY, sold land in Sussex Co, Delaware which had been owned by John Hopkins, deceased, Father of the above 3 Hopkins. I have already found Robert Lottridge & wife Elizabeth on an on-line site created and maintained by Mr. Stefan Bielinski which confirms their presence in Albany County, but I need a lot more of course. It is my present *assumption* that John Hopkins (the deceased Father) was once a resident of Albany County, who moved to Delaware, leaving behind his above three children. But I still have to *prove* that assumption (sigh !!!). Before I can prove (or not) it, however, I need to get a better handle on the available records. Thanks very much. Joe Lake, Sacramento, CA
Joe: There probab;y is no comprhensive list of sources but can suggest reviewing Olivetreegenealogy.com. http://www.olivetreegenealogy.com/index.shtml Be careful when accessing the records. Scroll down and check them out. Don't try just entering a name in the center of the site. That will take you to ancestry.com. Lots of FREE data including church and shps records etc. Also see the URL below for transcribed records etc. for the Albany area. New York not easy to search because there weren't many regulations on BMD's until 1880's. Of course lamnd and deed records as well as Wills are available through local County Clerks. Centralized records really not there for the most part. Also try NYGENWEB sites for particular Counties you are searching they vary in the amount of info provided but you should be able to get some help there.
Joe, Consult my website, "Albany & Eastern New York Genealogy." It has many aids that will help you. I wrote a webpage called "Finding Records in New York State." That will help you understand what is available for the Albany area and in the state. Also, my webpage "Guide to Albany Area Genealogical Resources" tells a great deal about finding records in the state. It lists where to write or phone over 40 places in surrounding counties. You can find all of these things using Google. The following URL will take you to a webpage where you can figure out which counties split off from Albany county and when. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nygenweb/county.htm Cliff Lamere ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ joslake@sbcglobal.net wrote: >Albany Listers: On May 14th, 2008 I ordered the following (3) fiche record from the >LDS Salt Lake City Library: "An Index of Albany County (N.Y.)
