German Catholic National Church for many years. Possibly was buried in the old Calvary Cemetery on Delaware Ave and then moved. Hi John, Kevin Franklin told me to write to you because you are the Albany County Historian and may be able to help. The reason this is so important to me is I don't want our family in Germany to believe that the people of Albany are a bunch of thieves. We knew that John Haefele had made a lot of money in Albany, NY. When he knew that he was dying, he sold all of his property and went back to Germany to die. I have found several newspaper articles about John Haefele and his son Matthew Haefele. They say pretty much what my Mom had told us. The family in Germany said that John had a large amount of money, gold coins, with him when he left Germany. This is true; Mom said that the family did not know what John did with his money. The family in Germany thinks that he was killed for his money as it was never found. We have never believed this. We thought that he hid his money and it is gone. The part that troubles me is, we always thought that he died in a house. The German family says that it was a hotel. I want to be able to tell them that he died of chronic nephritis, myocarditis, exertion and exhaustion as per his death certificate. Thank you for all of your help.
